  • In 1986, Renato Guttuso designed the effigy of the God of War ‘Mars’ for Gianni Battistoni, and with the technical collaboration of Pierre Dinand, a very famous designer in perfumery, created the peculiar ‘Mars’ bottle. Mars Red Planet is a fragrance launched in 2016, very fresh, with quite strong citrus and mint notes, especially in the opening; I find it quite sharp in the development as well, and there is nothing sweet about it. It is a composition that is a bit synthetic in my opinion, but quite wearable. It has a soft but perceptible longevity and trail; it is a proposal suitable for hot days or for sport, certainly for informal use. I am drawn to the Private Collection line by this designer; I hope to have the opportunity to test it.

  • What can one ask of a perfume? Quality, performance, structure… I don’t know, it’s difficult for me to analyse them as if they were an exam. My approach is organic and multisensory, as if an alien creature were clinging to the bottom of my feelings. That is how I understand perfumery: celebrating those great small moments when molecules fall like parachutists onto the skin. When they explode into fireworks that transport you to other years, eras, or dimensions. They make you dream, which is the function of art: to demonstrate that we are more than bones, blood, and skin. Today has been a hard day; I slept very little, with much work, determined to find a trade that allows me to work at night, isolated, against the social rhythm, like a hermit. But it is not easy; many interviewers, upon seeing what I aim for, look at me as if they do not understand what I am doing there, with a curriculum from another planet. The round of interviews begins, brief illusions and great disappointments, but with a clear objective. I get home, have a shower, and before dinner, I put on this ‘Marte Red Planet’, a glorious name, not quite knowing what to expect. And yes, it does not have the finest components, but the opening, with bitter citrus leaning towards orange, has given me a lovely moment of relaxation and well-being. It leaves a refreshing sensation, nuanced by mint and a soft blend of woods. A perfume with no pretension other than to make you feel good. From 2016, but it smells like 2003. I experience something similar with another seamless and ethereal fruity fragrance, such as Higher by Dior: acidic and addictive fruit, a soft trail and acceptable longevity. And in reality, I do not ask for much more: open its windows and let the breeze of its world enter. In this case, from Mars, the red planet. (From the treasures of Jerry Drake.)
