Ellen Covey, born in Elmhurst, Illinois, in 1947, had an unconventional upbringing. She spent her formative years moving between several European countries with her family. This exposure to different cultures and languages would later inform her unique approach to perfumery. Covey pursued higher education in the United States, obtaining a master’s degree in biology from the University of Texas and a doctorate in chemical senses from Duke University. Her academic training in neuroscience and chemical senses laid the foundations for her future career as a perfumer.
Her exceptional talent and versatility define Covey’s professional life. As a distinguished neurobiologist and researcher, she holds a chair in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington. In addition to her academic activities, Covey is a well-known perfumer and the founder of Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes.
Her passion for orchids led her to found Olympic Orchids, Inc. in 2006, which began as a nursery for orchid plants. Fascinated by the intricate aromas of these unique flowers, she expanded into the world of perfumery in 2010. Her fragrances have earned numerous accolades, including the Artisan award at the Art & Olfaction Award 2015 for Woodcut and the Independent award at the Art and Olfaction Awards 2016 for Bat, a collaboration with the Canadian perfume house Zoologist.
