  Perfume is pure art, and seeing those intertwined snakes on the bottle hypnotises you, forcing you to take a side without hesitation. It’s such a clear message that indifference doesn’t exist. What an achievement by Niki de Saint Phalle, a brilliant sculptor who manages to express her art through a scent. Stepping into that symbolic bottle isn’t easy; there’s complexity and mysticism that overwhelm you. It starts strong with herbs, lots of mint and very marked green notes. That spicy, slightly bitter touch of calendula reminds me of Balmain’s Ivoire, but Niki is darker. When the herbs and mint fade a little, the floral heart emerges with calendula, valley lily and some carnation, though it’s not the main focus. Then the mint gives way to a very well-crafted moss, with woods like cedar and fine touches of leather. Comparisons with Halston Classic and Chanel N19 are spot on; Niki stands shoulder to shoulder with those 70s giants, sharing the same DNA, but that more present leather gives it a subtle 80s twist. Comparing the three: Chanel N19 is more citrusy with accentuated florals, Halston leans more towards incense/herbal/lily root, and Niki is herbal like Halston but with that leather. For me, it evokes damp forest woods, herbs and roots; it’s not a delicate floral for everyone to enjoy, but a challenge for the wearer. The dry-down is rich, powdery, slightly sweet, with that woody moss and noticeable leather. It’s extremely unisex and fits today’s tastes perfectly. I recommend it 100%. My review is for a mid-2000s version.
