  I’m back with Etat Libre d’Orange, again thanks to the master Darkbeat. They are peculiar creations that you either love or hate, but always original and bold. Here we have something dense and full of contrasts: flowers clashing with resinous moss. The immortelle adds a very strange sweet-and-bitter touch; in the first 40 minutes I try to decipher the mystery of this Faun’s Afternoon without much success. Do I like it? It’s difficult; it makes me think of perfumes from another era with great personality. It can impress and isn’t for the mass market; you need a broad perfumer’s vision or you’ll find it hard to get used to. It’s a kaleidoscope of floral, green, woody and wild notes that demands strong personality. You’ll stand out from the crowd, try before you buy: it could be hate or love. In my case, I’m asking for a second date.

  This brand is getting very avant-garde. The immortelle launches with rose, incense and pepper; it sounds strange at first but soon becomes familiar, something quite atypical for me. After 15 minutes, myrrh, sandalwood and cinnamon come forward, though I don’t detect the oakmoss or bergamot, perhaps they’re lost beneath such a strong immortelle that smells a bit like Maggi stock. In the dry down it turns powdery and sweet. It reminds me of Casamorati 1888, not identical but in the same vein. It’s timeless, suitable for any season, unisex (slightly more masculine but works well on both), ideal for those over 30. Scent 8.5/10, Sillage 8/10, Projection 5.5/10, Longevity 4/10.
