  • I discovered this perfume thanks to Jerry Drake, who sent me generous samples of both versions: vintage and current. There’s a song by Triana that says: ‘How beautiful is spring / when it arrives’. Gainsboro reminds me of that; it’s luminous and full of green citrus, which gradually drifts towards a clean, fresh-from-the-shower soap. I’ve read funny comments in English like ‘perfume of the kingdom of lords over 90 years old’. But it’s not like that. Although it’s from the 70s, it feels totally timeless to me. It’s an English countryside green, fresh, mossy, delicate and complex, with floral and woody parts. It reminds me of Dunhill Blend 30 or Versace Green Jeans. What a treat to smell like this. The vintage version is more complex and long-lasting: although it’s a cologne, after projecting well for a couple of hours, it never ends, clinging to the skin as if it were stapled on. But I have no complaint with the modern version: it captures the spirit of the original very well (in fact, it’s hard to distinguish them unless you compare wrist to wrist) and it doesn’t have bad performance either. The price of the modern version is a gift. Essential for anyone on this wavelength.

  • In the dark corner of the salon, perhaps forgotten by its mistress, silent and covered in dust, the harp was seen. How many forgotten fragrances there have been! How many dreams slept with them! Thanks to people like Jerry Drake, who rescue this splendour, I have come to know this piece of perfumery history that lay in its trunk. Described as Spicy Aromatic, it is for me a masculine Chypre in all its original splendour. The bergamot, mosses, labdanum and patchouli are there, the basics of a Chypre, and in G-MAN DE GAINSBORO they unfold with all their force. It is a perfume isolated from an isolated brand that in the seventies paved the way for things like Paco Rabanne pour Homme or Quorum by Puig. The more I learn about these perfumes, the more I like them. For classicism, for originality, for scents no longer heard, for tenacity. Its aldehydic opening intensifies bold, acidic and bitter citrus until exhaustion, flooded with an intense, bright, mountainous green, where the scrublands of the durisilva struggle to overwhelm your olfactory defences and take possession of you like the wind. The heather, rosemary, thyme, mastic, holm oak and juniper. The gorse that scratches my legs in shorts. The sun rays burning my childish, sweaty skin. Resins that twist like will-o’-the-wisps, just like desire.

    Another lost gem I bought blind at a local vintage perfumerie, catching my eye on the black bottle number 76. G. Man is an incredible find on my perfume journey; with time, its depth only increases. It’s a highly refined spicy fragrance with a dynamic and super attractive effect. It exudes a spicy freshness that gives you incredible confidence and sovereignty. For hours, people notice you, and you enjoy being the centre of attention. I’m sure mature women, tired of the usual, will delight in this. It starts fresh and strong, with aldehydes providing structure and slightly bitter citrus, plus a very pleasant, enveloping soapy and spicy note. It lasts 5 hours on my skin, with strong presence for the first two. In my opinion, it’s fascinating and suitable for those not afraid of something different from today’s commercial offerings. Clean, masculine, conservative yet modern. Does it suit young people? Put on a suit and a hat. If it feels too big, wait ten years.

  • I picked this up at a flea market, still in its original box. Over 50 years of history, it was groundbreaking for its time. While it’s no longer fashionable, it remains a classic. The important thing is that if you wear it, you’ll be the only one with that scent.
