Today I spotted a beautiful glass bottle of this perfume, which seems to be from another era (it was made by Swank, then Regency, and now Songo), and the best part is that the liquid is intact. Its oriental typography, the modest slogan of ‘Man’s Cologne’, and that deep dark green are signs of something old and rare. It is a pure fern in its most classic and essential version. In the 60s, apart from herbal citrus, men went fashionable with these types of fragrances—which already came from a very long tradition—undoubtedly bolder and rougher than those crystalline jewels à la Eau Sauvage. Well, the 60s were the years of Brut, and in the US they were also the years of Jade East, which had huge success there (it is almost unknown in Europe), along with another fern I haven’t tried but has a cool name: Hai Karate. The opening of Jade East is rugged, almost wild, in a space halfway between Brut and Canoe: herbal to the maximum, with flashes of lime, and a strongly talc-like dry down. Here there is freshness and nature, but the best arrives gradually as it dries: the vanilla begins to appear, providing coverage for a spectacular sandalwood note that blends with the woody nuances, in a frankly accomplished combination. The easy way to talk about ‘Jade East’ is as a ‘barbershop cologne’, because it smells like your grandfather’s aftershave. But one must not forget that all these ferns, so popular in the 60s, were the stepping stone that led to the end of the 70s to the aromatic fern, which reached its pure glory and golden age in the 80s. As I said, it is still produced and sells very well in the North American market, but I have no idea if it has changed much compared to the bottle I have. I imagine it has, I imagine that back then it was quite more expensive than now, and this will most likely be felt in the quality of the ingredients and the richness of the composition, which in this case is exquisite, with good longevity and projection. Jade East can be considered a primitive fern that, nevertheless, overflows with charm and good manners.
Thanks to Bofifa’s help and kindness, I was able to try this Jade East, which was a complete unknown to me. Even with just the generous sample vial, you can already sense the joy of smelling something discontinued: a green, intense, and super fresh aroma. Once applied to the wrists and neck, it becomes clear that although the bottle says ‘cologne’, it is quite dense and long-lasting, very different from the usual. I was thrilled by this fresh masculine blend that, over time, becomes subtly creamy and green; it is highly addictive. If you want to stand out from the crowd and aren’t afraid to smell like an avian jungle, this is the perfect perfume for you.
