  I jumped into Oud Taiwan blind. Having read that it shares green notes with Chinese Oud, it seemed logical to assume that, given the territorial dispute, they must have something in common. As I had already tried Oud Kinam, I thought I knew what to expect. Upon arrival, I encountered a very unusual green. At first, it’s an explosion of mentholated plants, like those chesty rubs: tight and fresh. These are strange contrasts. As it dries down, that leafy green profile fades and I notice a smoky base with a musky touch that gives it that animal air of ALD. There are even flashes reminiscent of Al-Ambar with green notes. In the end, what remains is the scent of natural oud: resinous, woody, evoking ancient incense. The detail: it comes with 0.7 grams of concentrated oil. This smells less green, more woody and smoky, dark. This is what the perfume smells like in its dry-down. It’s appreciated to try the Taiwan oud on its own, without the notes accompanying the composition. For me, ALD is not a house to wear when you want to go out, be at the office, or pick someone up. It is a reflective house, for appreciating it alone, for moments of introspection, or for showing off to friends who enjoy perfumery. So in that sense, Oud Taiwan doesn’t change; it is an experimental perfume, a ‘private’ tasting experience. Update: you can tell it’s natural because it has given me a bit of an allergy, haha; the good thing is it’s just sneezes.
