Pure Black by Mandarina Duck is an aromatic woody fragrance for men. Launched in 2009, this composition was created by perfumer Nathalie Lorson. The top notes unfold with tangerine, pepper, and bergamot; the heart reveals tonka bean, tiare flower, and African orange blossom; while the base notes complete the structure with vanilla, sandalwood, and Virginia cedar.

It’s one of my favourite perfumes for everyday wear, although some might think it’s more for the evening. On my skin, it leaves a trail for just the first hour; afterwards it disappears, but the scent lingers on the skin and clothes for many, many hours. One of my top choices for going to work.
It is one of my favourite perfumes for everyday wear, although some might think it’s better suited for evening. On my skin, the trail lasts only the first hour; afterwards it fades, but the scent lingers on my skin and clothes for many, many hours. One of my preferred choices for going to work!
It starts sweet and striking with tonka bean, vanilla, and a bit of orange. After a few hours, it levels out and remains sweet, with the flowers becoming noticeable too. I’m not a huge fan of neroli, but here it’s very pleasant, noticeable but very subtle. Fragantica says it’s similar to Chanel Allure Sport Extreme and 1 Million. I also detect that similarity, but very faintly. I do note that minimal, background note that flashy perfumes like 212 VIP or 1 Million usually have, but in my opinion, Mandarina Duck Pure Black isn’t necessarily for the night; I see it as more versatile, for day and night, any time of year. It lasts 8 hours, but after five, the projection drops noticeably. In my view, it’s very pleasant, calm, nothing flashy, with many sweet notes (tonka bean, vanilla, some amber). If you like sweet perfumes, it’s an option. Just my take. Many thanks.
Mandarina Duck BLACK was created by the nose Natalie Lorson and is a lovely fragrance. For the little it costs, it offers a lot. Ideal if you like sweet and relaxed scents. It has good chemistry, is versatile for day and night, cold or warm weather. It’s practical and long-lasting. Within its apparent simplicity lies complexity. It’s not just orange juice, nor just flowers, nor just tonka; it has spice and wood that give it a sharp masculinity. Its strength is that it’s hard to find nowadays; it seems to be disappearing from physical stores, so if you find a bottle, you’re lucky. It’s sweet but not cloying, masculine, and from a good nose that doesn’t empty your wallet. Recommended while it can still be found… Interesting to try in the evening.
It has the same opening and first few minutes as Burberry Brit Rythm: that sweet tonka bean. However, this one is slightly lighter, making it more versatile. Overall, it is a decent fragrance. It hasn’t blown my mind with anything novel but it fulfils its purpose. For guys looking for something semi-sweet for almost any occasion, it is a good candidate. Avoid it in the heat because that tonka bean and vanilla would suffocate me. I recommend it for the afternoon, evening, cold or mild days. If you already own the Burberry, buying this would be ‘raining on wet ground’.

THIS PERFUME IS EVERYTHING! Absolutely, give it two thumbs up! I discovered this gem months ago and can’t understand the delay; I feel foolish for not noticing sooner. For under €20, I got a real treat with excellent formulation, balanced and smelling much more expensive than it is, like other Natalie Lorson scents. Pure Black is perfect for smelling rich without thinking. Suitable for all seasons and occasions, with good persistence, especially on clothes. It has an excellent fruity note, complemented fabulously by tonka bean and vanilla. I can’t understand how it’s so cheap. If you don’t want to spend a fortune but want to smell like a dashing young man who spent his holidays in Europe, don’t wait any longer and go for Mandarina Duck Pure Black with conviction. 💪
THIS PERFUME IS ABSOLUTELY A HIT, CLEARLY A WINNER! I discovered this gem a couple of months ago and can’t fathom why I waited so long, simply because I was being foolish and timid! In short, for under 20 euros, I walked away with this marvel featuring an excellent, balanced formula that smells far more expensive than it is, in the style of the legendary Natalie Lorson. Pure Black is ideal for those days when you want to smell rich without thinking too much. It suits all seasons and occasions, with very good longevity, especially on clothes. It has a fantastic fruity note, complemented perfectly by a touch of tonka bean and vanilla. To be honest, I still can’t believe how cheap it is. So you know, darling, if you don’t want to splash out but want to smell like a dashing young man who spent his holidays in Europe, don’t wait any longer and go for the Mandarina Duck Pure Black. 💪
Excellent for personal use. If you can get the trail and longevity, it’s worth every penny. 10/10.
Excellent fragrance for personal enjoyment. The trail and longevity are moderate, but if you can get your hands on it, it’s worth every penny. 10/10
Does anyone know if it’s true that it’s similar to Mauboussin Private Club? That fragrance is a real gem.
I don’t see the resemblance to Eros or Allure Sport Extreme that others mention. To me, it smells citrusy and earthy. On me, it reminds me of Tous Man, which is also described as sweet, but I don’t detect that. Smell is subjective, I suppose.
It’s 90% similar to the discontinued Lanvin Avant Garde. Given the price, I’d totally recommend buying it blind.
I bought this bottle six years ago and now there’s only 5ml left. The citrus notes have faded with age, but the vanilla and tonka bean remain, sweet without being cloying. If you look closely, there’s a hint of black pepper and subtle woods. The white flowers just add a luminous, light touch. It’s warm, spiced, and sweet, ideal for work or casual outings. It now costs around €23 (previously €18), so it’s highly recommended, although perhaps not for hot weather or evening wear.
This review is about the last 5ml of the bottle I bought some six years ago. Given the time that has passed, I can barely distinguish the citrus in the opening, as these volatile notes have surely faded. What I do appreciate now, just as before, is the combined aroma of vanilla and tonka bean, giving it a sweet but not cloying aura. That is the impression it will give to anyone who smells it. Sniffing more closely, there is a spicy nuance from black pepper. There are also subtle woody notes in the dry down. Don’t be alarmed: among the notes there are white flowers that manage to give the composition a ‘bright’ and ‘light’ touch. In short, it is a warm, slightly spiced perfume with sweet tones that are not cloying. At the current price (around 23€, previously around 18€) it is highly recommended. I used it for work and it doesn’t clash, ideal for informal outings. I don’t think it is suitable for hot weather, and for the evening it might be a bit short for my taste.
