  • It is a perfume that transports you to other times and places. It embodies the original concept of Anaïs Biguine’s collection: three fragrances for tattooed skin inspired by ancestral rituals from New Zealand, Japan and India. Moko Maori evokes indigenous New Zealand plants used ritually by the Māori for generations. On their website, the brand links it to the Māori vision of tattooing: the triumph of nobility, peace of spirit and rites of passage. I find it difficult to review because I lack a reference point; the scent of those Oceanian flowers and plants feels too distant to me. Aware of this, I can only say it smells strange and sombre. Rather than recalling the vegetal notes it suggests, it reminds me of ink, shoe polish, old damp wood, perhaps Magnolia soap straight from the box, leather, menthol, earth and a hint of smoke. It is dry, earthy and soapy. Many call it floral, but to me it smells nothing of flowers. I suppose it is hard for two people to perceive it the same way. Has anyone else tried it? On my skin it lasts four hours, then leaves a faint trail of smoky ink and musk, which is very odd. I do not mind; perhaps it is like those ephemeral mystical design tattoos that are in fashion: you do not want them to last a lifetime, but you wear them proudly for their uniqueness and concept, just as this aroma, which will not be accessible to everyone.
