Coco Noir by Chanel is an oriental woody fragrance for women. Launched in 2012, this composition was created by Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake. The top notes unfold with grapefruit, bergamot and orange; the heart reveals a harmony of rose, geranium, jasmine, narcissus and peach; while the base notes settle on patchouli, sandalwood, frankincense, tonka bean, vanilla, white musk, cloves and benzoin.

Here gender preferences break down. I loved it. I love oriental scents and if you like the classic Coco EDP, you will like this too, although I am not a fan of Coco Mademoiselle. Its opening is potent, but after a few minutes it becomes light on my skin. I will continue to test it in terms of longevity.

  • I tested it on my skin and fell in love with the opening; it is not offensive and remains balanced. Over time it becomes more citrusy, fresh, elegant and slightly woody. Although it can be unisex, my skin usually turns them very masculine, but this one seems very pleasant to me. It lasts quite a bit without being overwhelming as the bottle or the ‘Noir’ suggest. I added it to my wishlist; I think it would go well in summer, perhaps from December to March, but better once the pandemic has passed and savings are freer. Edit: it also didn’t remind me of Coco Mademoiselle which I already own.

  • Mysterious, refined and discreet. It has two marked facets: first, a spicy citrus opening that projects strongly for half an hour, where a volatile patchouli shines before fading; second, a warm, woody floral dry-down that projects moderately until it extinguishes at six hours on the skin. I am a fan of the dry-down and regret that the intensity is so discreet and lasts just enough for an EDT.

  • Finally I have it and the best thing is that it was a gift. I like it for its touch of incense and non-sour citrus; it is like an improved Mademoiselle. It smells of sweet oranges, white flowers and incense. It is perfect, simple, smells clean and lasts.

  • I love it; it is the favourite of this line, but I have a caveat: the longevity. Perfumes usually last all day for me, but Chanel ones don’t pass three hours and I already have to reapply. It isn’t cheap and, being Chanel, I expected more. I think that is the only reason why when it runs out, I probably won’t repurchase it unless it is very cheap, because otherwise it isn’t worth it.

  • I love it. In my opinion it smells better than its sister, Coco Mademoiselle, and is less in fashion, which is a plus. It is a classic: elegant, warm and sensual, for any occasion. It just lacks longevity; in my case it projects for about two hours and lasts six on the skin. For a Chanel it is improvable, but for the scent it is worth it.

  • Coco Noir is the perfect bargain; it serves almost always (except in very hot weather), whether outside or inside, day or night. Always elegant and without being heavy. I recommend it without doubt. For me, it is a classy staple.

It hasn’t suited me; it smells too much of balsamic oriental and upon testing it stung my throat. We didn’t match.

To be brief: for me, it is a light oriental, very elegant and subtle. It has the DNA of Coco Mademoiselle, but the latter is more loaded with orange and patchouli. In contrast, Coco Noir has a more intense patchouli with the warmth of sandalwood and rose with jasmine, those flowers almost always incorporated by Chanel in their feminine fragrances. It is not sweet on my skin. It is a warm perfume with a discreet but powerful presence. I don’t know if it has been reformulated, but when it launched it always had moderate and discreet performance. At the end of its dry-down it leaves a synthetic white musk, but masterfully worked so it doesn’t smell like soap. The scent is warm and elegant, never losing that identity. It is for lovers of patchouli with roses and woods, and will be greatly appreciated.

  • It is a warm and elegant fragrance, very discreet and pleasant, though I don’t think it justifies its price as it isn’t extraordinary. I bought it without regrets and enjoy it, but it leaves me with the feeling that it isn’t worth so much for the brand. It doesn’t match its dark bottle or name at all; it has nothing nocturnal or intense about it. It’s a daytime scent ideal for the office or when you don’t want to stand out, but still to feel elegant. I would use it in any season, but only during the day, as at night I prefer something more potent. Its trail is medium-low and lasts four hours on my skin, which isn’t bad considering my skin doesn’t hold perfumes well.

  • It is an oriental perfume with that typical Chanel elegance, with good fixative qualities (it lasts about 12 hours for me) but little projection. For me, it has the best of Coco Mademoiselle and Coco Chanel without being overwhelming; it has a feminine opening that fascinates me, and once dried down, it becomes a mature fragrance. The black bottle suits it perfectly for the elegance it projects.

  • Coco Noir is elegance and empowerment, those perfumes that shout ‘here I am’. I love it for how it makes me feel and it is so pleasant to enjoy, not as overwhelming as its sister Coco Mademoiselle, a little more subtle with a just-right trail. It is versatile but for special occasions. It makes you feel unique, powerful, and sophisticated.

  • Coco Noir is Coco Mademoiselle with maturity, style, and empowerment, understood as knowing what you want and what you don’t, with the experience and common sense that time gives. It is a perfectly sublime woody and floral elegance. Chanel’s combination of rose and patchouli is very characteristic and beautiful. Elegant to infinity. I had a small bottle of Coco Mademoiselle (Eau de Toilette) and put it away upon perceiving a reformulation I did not like. Today, without a doubt, I would choose Coco Noir first.

  • I got it at a good price, bought it blind, and at first it hit me hard when smelling it directly and applying it, too strong and sharp. But I never let myself be swayed by the first impression; I let it dry, and within minutes it settled on my skin as a super-rich, delicate, and feminine talc, lasting about 10 hours. Honestly, I do not find it similar to Mademoiselle, which leaves a very citrusy trail on my skin.

  • Very good scent but lamentable longevity and projection; after half an hour, you have to press your nose to smell it. I suppose the previous ones were better, but in 2022 I see an exorbitant cost for the longevity… I will not gift it again; it is a deception. 50ml for 83 euros with ridiculous longevity and projection, a rip-off by Chanel.

I bought it because I found it cheap, although it is expensive. The opening is unisex leaning masculine, but on skin the florals come through and it becomes feminine. It is rich and elegant, but if you are under 30, I don’t think it is for daily wear; it is better for serious occasions like interviews, theatre, or business dinners. I would not buy it again because, although it is rich, it does not fascinate me; it is expensive and its trail and longevity are low. If you are looking for something mature without smelling like ‘old lady’ and elegant, opt for Hugo Boss Ma Vie Femme Pour Femme EDP, which is more youthful, suitable for everyday wear, and cheaper. If you are unsure between this and Coco Mademoiselle, consider the pros: Coco Noir is less ubiquitous and more personal, whereas Coco Mademoiselle has better longevity and projection.

To me, it is the best female perfume from Chanel. It is incredible, very spiced yet feminine at the same time, and nothing else compares to it.

  • ceciiliapaz

I’ve had it for a while; I bought it in summer and wore it the next day. On skin, it lasted about four hours and disappointed me given the price, but on clothes, it survived until the wash. I wore it today in the middle of winter with the cold, and it performed excellently—I’ve worn it for 12 hours and am surprised by how fresh it still feels; it seems more summery, although in winter I prefer stronger, warmer scents. It is delicious, super-elegant, and feminine, one of my favourite Chanel scents and less ubiquitous than Coco Mademoiselle, which smells like everyone else. I fell in love with it for warm climates, but it performs excellently in the cold (for me).

  • Jaionemaite3

I’ve noticed it doesn’t last or project for others, but it lasted all day on me, and the scent is truly exquisite.

  • LosPerfumesDeJavi

Coco Noir is the most ‘Chanel’ they have released recently: a delicious, super-natural scent with nothing synthetic, featuring patchouli, incense, rose, and sandalwood. It is very refined, reminiscent of Coco Mademoiselle but far superior—darker and more sophisticated, without diminishing the other, which I adore. It lasts about six hours with a powerful trail that fades after four; on my skin, it is very intense. A triumph from this great house.

  • MarinaEtoile

It is a lovely scent, a warmer, spicier brother than classic Coco Mademoiselle and a proper ‘Chanel’. It evokes walking with a bouquet of roses, jasmines, and narcissus in an oriental market, feeling the sparkle of cloves and a slight pinch of vanilla, barely hidden among woods and incense. On me it lasts all day and so much so that, although I like it, it gets to annoy me, so I have decided to wear it at night and on slightly colder days where it shines with all its distinction. I agree with everyone that it is a total success by Chanel.

  • Cosmoloid

I don’t understand the reviews describing its poor longevity and trail. I wonder if they have fake bottles from China, as there are many on sale. This lasts a long time and is quite intoxicating. I don’t intend to advertise Chanel but this creation is excellent. It lasts 7-8 hours; yes, the base stays close to the skin but you can still feel it afterwards. It is a feminine character perfume with a unisex dry-down without losing its delicate and floral aura. The name Noir doesn’t seem out of place; it’s more ‘dark’ than Coco Mademoiselle, but it’s a creative title, it doesn’t have to be literal. A creation of 10 by Polge and Sheldrake.

  • For me, it is one of the most beautiful bottles that exist and I won’t let you out of that one, hahaha. I have it displayed in a bookshelf in my living room. I admit I bought it blindly, telling myself that as a connoisseur I had to have it. Its scent is very different from the rest of my collection; it’s like a little jewel in my arsenal. I’m looking forward to the cold arriving to enjoy it again this winter, especially for special occasions like Christmas dinners or with friends, or on days when I feel down and need a boost. I recommend not buying it blindly as I did, as the more I used it the more I liked it, and at first it took me a while to get used to it.

  • Mademoiselle5

I have it and it is a delicate, classic, and very exquisite perfume. On my skin it lasts more than 8 hours and on clothes more than 3 days.

  • It is marketed as a night perfume and the opening certainly is: it screams night, elegance, and mystery, but it quickly changes completely and becomes an improved version of Mademoiselle. I already have Mademoiselle and seeing that they dry to almost identical scents for my nose, I was disappointed. If I didn’t have Mademoiselle, I would certainly buy this; of the two, it is the same but better. Since I already have Mademoiselle, it wasn’t worth having two identical ones. Perhaps when I finish Mademoiselle I will buy Noir instead of replacing it. If you don’t have Mademoiselle, I recommend buying this.

I love it! Along with its older brother COCO, they are my favourite duo for elegant and formal occasions. They are perfumes that make people turn to look at you; heads turn just because. It is certainly a jewel. Watch out, it has a big trail and its notes are a bit heavy, but if you don’t wear it close to your face, it will be fine for the day.

  • I bought it blindly based on your comments and now my wife smells like an old lady. Neither she nor I like it. I don’t know what to do with the perfume.

  • chloesanchez

In my opinion, a magnificent perfume. Coco Noir by Chanel is elegant and sophisticated. The top notes unfold a citrusy and fresh explosion of grapefruit and bergamot which then blend with the spicy warmth of pink pepper. As it develops, the heart reveals exquisite floral notes of rose, jasmine, and narcissus, adding femininity and timeless elegance. Finally, the base is a sensual blend of patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla, sandalwood, and white musk, adding depth. It screams night, elegance, and sensuality. I wear it whenever I can, going out at night or dressed up. Highly recommended.

  • Veranosol12

I cannot decipher it. I have tested it more than seven times on blotting paper and, no, I still cannot define it.

  • Veranosol12

It left me stumped! Not because of complexity, but because of magic. I left it on my side table and by dawn its scent had transformed. I’ve always wanted to experience that metamorphosis but couldn’t smell it; I asked others if perhaps I was the one failing to perceive it, and yes, it was only me. That night I felt it was time to own it, buying it almost impulsively. Today, every time I wear it is different: sometimes I feel wrapped in a comforting talc, other times the frankincense takes over and reminds me of Belle d’Opium (which I have tucked away and no longer tolerate). Other times I feel clean and other times I don’t. What I affirm is that I don’t see it as a night perfume or as sophisticated as they say, but rather clean and suitable for any time of day when I wear it. I think people are persuaded by the black bottle and the nocturnal marketing. Should I have bought it? Do I like it or not? For me, they are just questions.

  • A perfume with an almost toasted sugary base; it reminds me of a cheaper alternative (CIEL NOIR). I don’t dislike it, but I don’t perceive it as particularly elegant within the collection.

  • Vanessayasmin

I bought it based on reviews and was disappointed, literally it smells of wet cinnamon. I didn’t like it at all… and paying that price hurt. I cannot recommend it.

  • molletmod.73

Coco Mademoiselle dressed up as a witch for the rather posh Halloween party with my university friends.

  • anamaestracorreo

I never thought of adding a Chanel to my collection, but tastes change. It has a lot of the Mademoiselle DNA. For me, it is easier to wear, less intense and less loud. It is the spiced version of the first one. I don’t see it as a night perfume despite the name and bottle; it is quite versatile. The patchouli from the other one is less noticeable; it is more powdery and woody. I should have bought only this one; the first will remain forgotten. The review that says it smells of wet cinnamon amused me; it’s not bad, it does have a hint of cinnamon. I love it.

  • The best women’s perfume I have ever tried. Its notes are another dimension. It lasts 12 hours on the skin and has great projection. I believe it is the best for a romantic date or to catch attention on a winter night. An exquisite aroma due to the combination of notes. I perceive it as very floral, and the incense is key to giving it that feminine and sensual touch. I have no words; it leaves me speechless.

  • I used Coco Mademoiselle EDP for over 10 years and didn’t know about the Noir. As people said they were similar, I bought it blindly. Upon trying it, I thought I didn’t like it much; it left me indifferent. But it has magic; over time it has won me over and I’m on my second bottle. I see it as vintage yet modern, elegant, with a dark and clean touch, like an old luxury soap. You wear it anywhere and it always leaves a good impression. It’s in my top 3. ❤️

  • Total obsession. I understand the concept ‘Noir’: it’s not a dark perfume, but it evokes black through the elegance it conveys. It is serious and sober, yet with its flirtatious touch. It has a special magic; I need it. There has been a before and an after. (The image of Coco dressed as a witch xD amused me)

  • cursedhazakura

I bought it by mistake; I wanted the Coco EDP, my little darling. Chanel Noir is the younger sister of the EDP: they are similar, but this one is so much softer, sexier and darker, although still soft. Perhaps it’s because I’m used to the EDP. I detect narcissus, incense and patchouli… it smells of mystical elegance.

  • Among my favourites: that blend of citrus, florals and resins is the perfect, harmonious and elegant combination. It empowers you, hehe. Long live Coco Noir!
