Penguin by Zoologist Perfumes is a leather-scented fragrance designed for men and women. Launched in 2024, this composition is signed by nose Chiaki Nomura. The top notes reveal an ozonic air, ice, and juniper berry; the heart unfolds with pink pepper, saffron, and labdanum; while the base notes land on suede, moss, musk, and sandalwood.

Undoubtedly, the Zoologist fragrance packaging is stunning and holds significant collectible value; on presentation alone, it easily deserves a 10/10. As for the scent, Victor Wong has been leaving us cold for some time—not because of this particular perfume, but due to the lack of grace and depth in his recent releases. The opening is crisp, and you certainly feel that icy characteristic for the first five minutes… after that, things take a turn for the worse. The perfume smells pleasant enough, yet it devolves into a somewhat generic modern/fresh fougère with little personality, zero distinction, and weak performance. The trail stays very close to the skin, and the longevity is merely adequate. For brand loyalists, this will be a must-have, primarily for its packaging, but for those seeking an authentic Arctic cold in a bottle, this Penguin will leave you chilled… but out of boredom. A lovely scent, yet nothing remarkable compared to previous releases like Sacred Scarab, Cardinal, or Bat, which are fast becoming legends within the Zoologist mythology.

  • I’ll keep it brief: the first time I tried it, it seemed a bit like Bvlgari’s Rain Essence, but over the days I kept thinking to myself, ‘hey, what’s this? I haven’t smelled this before.’ It’s a fragrance that truly represents me, both in the imagery it inspires and its scent. It’s very potent yet not intrusive; it’s incredibly comfortable to wear and won’t disturb those around you—in fact, people will ask what you’re wearing because it smells so good. It has a fascinating evolution that personally evokes for me a street in Monaco on a cloudy, cold afternoon after a light rain: a very clean and fresh scent, but not the typical freshness you’re used to. This is a more realistic, soft, and sophisticated freshness, very well executed, with ingredients of excellent quality noticeable throughout, though there are occasional fleeting moments where it feels slightly sweet. Scent: 9/10, longevity: 10/10, sillage: 9/10. If you can afford it and are considering buying it blind, without a doubt, do it.

21/03/24 I’ve tried Penguin again and I can talk about performance. The scent is notable but the performance isn’t. I wore it on skin and clothes and for the price it falls short. If, like me, buying perfumes in this range or above is an effort, I’d think hard about whether it’s worth it. It’s a pity because although I’m not much of an aquatic fragrance person, this is the only one that has caught my attention to spend money on. But with this performance, no. Projection for the first two hours is very good, but from the third hour it fades quickly until it’s skin-scent only. On clothes it lasts a bit longer but not much. By six or seven hours the trail is negligible. What a shame.

  • I heard this smells like a suede jacket with tobacco. I went to try it and the idea stuck with me. It’s true, it smells different, but I wouldn’t buy it. It’s a typical experience from this brand, nothing more, not a fragrance to enjoy or one that defines your style.

  • I read somewhere that it smells like a suede jacket with a cigar. I went to try it and the idea stuck with me. Literally. I wouldn’t buy it; while it is different, it’s a typical experience from this house, nothing like a perfume to enjoy or a signature scent.

A brutal fragrance, the crown jewel of my collection. It smells of intense cold, not merely fresh, and is absolutely delicious. The only drawback is that the bottle size is quite small and it’s hard to get hold of. Picture stepping out at night in freezing temperatures with a very subtle sweet touch, like chilled water with ice. Rating: 10/10, my favourite.

Spectacular perfume, the best in my collection. Cool scent, not fresh, absolutely delicious. The only downside is the bottle contains little and it’s hard to find. Smells like stepping out at night in freezing cold with a very subtle sweet note. Comparison: very cold water with ice. Rating: 10/10, my favourite perfume.
