Joanne Lesley Malone CBE is a British perfumer and businesswoman, best known for founding Jo Malone London and Jo Loves, two highly successful fragrance companies. Born on 5 November 1963 in Bexleyheath, in south-east London, Malone had a difficult childhood due to severe dyslexia and her mother’s stroke, which led her to leave school at the age of 13 to care for her.
Despite her early challenges, Malone developed a love of fragrances and began her career in the beauty industry at the age of 20, working as a beautician and developing her own perfumed products. In 1990, she founded Jo Malone London and launched her first fragrance, Nutmeg & Ginger, which quickly became a bestseller.
Malone’s unique approach to fragrances, which included creating scents that could be combined and layered, won her devoted followers and attention from the beauty industry. In 1999, she sold Jo Malone London to Estée Lauder Companies for an undisclosed sum, but continued to work for the company as its creative director until 2006.
In 2011, Malone launched Jo Loves, a new fragrance company focused on aromas and less conventional packaging. The company quickly gained a cult following and expanded into a range of products for the bath, body and home.
Over the years, Malone has received numerous awards for her work in the fragrance industry, including an MBE in 2008 and a CBE in 2018. She has also been invited to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs programme.
In addition to fragrances for Jo Loves and Jo Malone London, she composed many excellent fragrances for Zara.
