Ebony Wood by Zara is a woody-spicy fragrance from the woody family, designed for men and women. Launched in 2019, this olfactive composition was created by nose Jo Malone. In its opening, the fragrance unfolds top notes of pink pepper, grapefruit, and cypress; the heart reveals a coffee accord; and the base settles on vetiver and patchouli.

  • I bought it for myself but it suits a woman better; for me it’s perhaps too feminine. On them it’s brilliant, madness.

  • alvarodominguez

Does anyone know if it has been reformulated? I’ve bought it again and I have the feeling it doesn’t smell the same nor last as long as before.

This perfume is a gem. It smells delicious on sweet woods. Without a doubt I perceive the spiciness of the pepper and the sweetness of the clove. A very rich and elegant perfume. I was looking among the Jo Malone scents and I can’t find anything similar; it’s a pity because Zara is going to remove it from its catalogue at any moment.

  • What a perfume bomb! It’s a bomb of woods and spices, I love it. Its trail and fixation are the best. Good price for the quality, pity it’s no longer available.

  • I sniffed this perfume in a Zara store without knowing it. I sprayed it on my wrist and it seemed very spicy, something peculiar but nothing wow. When I came out and perceived the dry-down, I loved that luxurious woody base and had to run back to buy it. Until today it’s the perfume with the most compliments; I love it so much.

  • I bought it based on reviews and recommendations from YouTube experts. It’s a subtle, green scent that leans fresh but has a sweet note. I think it reminds me of a green infusion with a bit of sugar. In terms of feelings, it transports me to a Good Friday day on the street with lots of people or perhaps a church; it gives me that familiarity. In conclusion, it’s not what I expected, perhaps because I don’t like green or aquatic perfumes. I think it could be worn by both men and women, but it’s a subtle scent, it doesn’t smell masculine. Regarding the recommendations, it’s not to my taste, it doesn’t please me. If you don’t like infusions, I think you won’t like it.

  • THE BEST OF ZARA. It smells expensive to me, literally it could be a niche perfume and its performance is even better than some more expensive ones. Smells super rich on wood, very cosy and elegant; I feel it could be for day or night. Even my sister, who doesn’t like perfumes, loved it.

  • An intense perfume, not quite to my taste, although I know those who like Angel or Black Orchid might enjoy it. Smells citrusy like bitter tangerine peel, cloves, pepper and a bit of wood, perhaps vetiver at the start. For me it’s unisex, tending towards masculine. The longevity is very good, I think 8 hours or more, and the projection is also extensive. Good price for these characteristics.

  • From my perspective, the best from Zara and I’ve smelled almost all of them. It could be signed by Essential Parfums or some niche house. Mysterious, sexy, warm and luxurious; it smells expensive and here is that sensation. On a date with Erba Pura, the girl asked what I’d put on my wrist and it smelled incredible; it was Ebony Wood from the morning. I told her if she didn’t like the one on my neck more, she said not a chance, the good one was the one on my wrist. Not much more to say. EDIT: I had an old flat bottle of 90ml from 2022. Now I have a new round bottle of 100ml from 2024 and yes, the scent changes. The opening feels much of the green note and it no longer smells so expensive. I don’t know if Zara messed it up or if I should wait years for it to mature, but what a disappointment.

What a perfume! I’ve got a bit left and I’m sad it’s running out. A delightful surprise, without a doubt. Warm, woody and pleasant on the skin; when I wear it, I imagine myself near a fireplace reading or having coffee with a coat. I’m not usually a fan of woody scents, but this blind buy was a 100% success. Lasts about 4 or 5 hours on the skin and on clothes, you can’t even tell. I see it as unisex, for day or night, and for cold weather: an absolute treat.

Fantastic perfume!!! For me the best from Zara, alongside Sunrise on the Red Sand Dunes. A work of art by Jo Malone. Very versatile, I use it almost all year round. A gem.

  • Don’t buy the 2024 version without trying the tester first… it smells the same… but after half an hour the scent begins to change and by an hour it’s barely perceptible… at least to my nose… a real pity as it was in my top 10 of Zara.

  • Hello. I think Ebony Wood is the highest quality perfume Zara has had, of course, in collaboration with the great perfumer Jo Malone. I had it during my more floral-fruity phase and even when it wasn’t bothering me, I got rid of it. Now that I’ve learned to appreciate warm and woody aromas too, I regret it. I agree with some opinions that the 2024 version isn’t the same. Best wishes.

  • If you loved Nobody Knows as much as I did, but couldn’t find it when trying to buy it again, take this one. It’s practically the same, but with double the trail and longevity, and it seems Zara will keep it permanently as it has just returned to both Europe and Latin America. Note: I bought the one that recently returned to stores and it has brutal longevity and trail. It doesn’t seem like a Zara perfume but a niche one due to its uncommon scent. However… Le Mâle Pride 2024 also resembles it a lot, but I feel it has less longevity on the skin.

  • A comforting vibe from Gentle Fluidity Gold. Ebony Wood shares countless notes with Gentle Fluidity Gold and has the same elegant and medicinal vibe. I find it more medicinal than woody. To the rose, sandalwood, tonka and amber, Malone adds clove and pink pepper. With orange blossom and bergamot but without tobacco flower and blackcurrant. It also shares cedar, praline, pear, coconut and lavender. Without cinnamon but with vetiver, orchid and iris. With all this, Ebony Wood maintains the rarity of Gentle Fluidity Gold in its more versatile version. It’s amusing that a Malone perfume has the vibe of one from master Francis Kurkdjian.

  • I bought it blindly based on reviews; it’s a pleasant aroma. At first, it’s too green and very fresh, reminding me of the forest and grass. After a while, personally, it smells like crushed sugar buñuelos with piloncillo turned into perfume. It’s sweet. The truth is, it projects quite a bit and smells strong, but I ended up gifting it to my mum. I feel Ebony Woods suits mature people better; it’s beautiful and very calming.

  • I detect ebony, then pepper, and although it’s not listed, I can smell orange blossom. It’s intense. After two hours, I sense orange blossom and sugar, like a garden with green orange shoots and a citrus dessert.

  • Super fresh unisex perfume that everyone likes. It’s sparkling at first and woody when dry, a unique fragrance. I think it’s expensive for Zara, but it doesn’t reach Argentina. The pepper is present and the ebony. The sparkle is confused with juicy passion fruit or a citrus ice cream; it’s indescribable. Love at first sniff.

  • What a lovely scent. It smells incredibly fresh and green, with fine woody notes. It’s a cosy fragrance yet still fresh, a real pleasant surprise.

  • Lavidahuelebonito

Smells awful at first, then improves, but it just doesn’t result in a pleasant perfume to wear.

  • I have a small Zara collection and keep adding to it because they’re either clones or dupe versions of other fragrances. Zara usually has weak longevity, though there are exceptions. Ebony Wood is one of the few with moderate staying power. It smells rich, fresh, citrusy, and green at the start, like tea. Some say it smells medicinal, but that’s just the opening; once it settles, the base and heart shine through: citrus wood, sweet, and spicy. It becomes a high-class scent. Its subtlety invites people to ask what it is, and it’s very different from designer or niche perfumes. I believe Jo Malone created something wonderful. It’s unique. It met my expectations and earned compliments without me asking; even a colleague wanted a sample. It smells unisex, with a more masculine opening and a predominantly unisex dry-down. On my skin, it lasted eight hours, and it was still noticeable on my shirt the next day. The projection was about two metres initially, fading to a personal bubble by the fifth hour. A lady smelled my neck at seven hours and was fascinated. One of the best compliments: an action speaks louder than a thousand words. For me, it’s one of the best from Zara. If I were to rate it 10: Scent 10, Projection 9.5, Sillage 9. Overall, 9.5. Tremendous perfume. 95 points for Jo Malone and Zara.

  • Irene1975

It’s unique. I was absolutely delighted it returned; I’d been waiting with bated breath. It’s a gem that doesn’t envy any niche brand; for me, it’s the best Zara has to offer. Sadly, it was reformulated in 2024 with a citrus opening it didn’t have before, though it retains 80% of the original DNA. I hope they bring back the first edition as it was.

  • If I had to say something, it’s rich and mysterious, especially as it evolves. It’s unisex, perhaps with a slightly feminine touch.

  • Reminds me of the discontinued Nobody Knows. Here, cypress and grapefruit dominate the opening, lasting about half an hour before drying down to reveal clove and ebony. I disagree with Fragrantica; they must be referring to the old version. The brand lists ebony, pink pepper, and clove. They really should update their catalogue. I’m already looking forward to the Elixir version, which I’m sure I’ll buy. It’s aromatic, green, and spicy, very different from my already extensive collection.

  • Starts with an acidic fruit note, nothing citrusy, then evolves into something mysterious, dry, and green. It’s sweet and semi-floral; simply a niche scent in a Jo Malone bottle from Zara.

Finally, I was able to smell this perfume, and the truth is it hasn’t said anything to me, neither elegant nor anything of the sort; I felt a green, spicy, woody, and strange perfume, with a note I don’t like. Fortunately, I didn’t let myself be carried away by the hype of ‘very good guys and girls, welcome to my channel!’. Edited after drying and feeling that I know this scent from somewhere: in the dry down it is The Secret Temptation by AB but without the vanilla and with the same poor longevity.

I noticed this little gem because I saw many videos about it. I have a sensitivity to scents, I don’t use ‘Piri bisquir cimplidis’ (please, think better). Otherwise, by the experience they can bring. With that said, Ebony Wood is an introspective little gem, totally addictive, sweet, spicy, spiced, quite different. It’s a scent you won’t find anywhere else; it feels like it comes from a force of nature. My occasions for use would be related to introspective things, thoughts, calm: a trip to the mountain cabin, a chess tournament, an architecture presentation, going to a library or buying art things, museums, gatherings at home with loved ones. I put this perfume on with 4 sprays before guests arrived, then another 6 after 30 minutes, and by the time they arrived at 6 pm, it lasted until 11 am the next day. It’s a unisex scent; I wouldn’t say it has a gender, but it’s not a masculine scent either; if you’re looking for that impression in the aroma, it’s not there; it’s a scent just to let the intellect and emotions out.

  • María Jacqueline

It smells like those spiced and special scents from the 70s, 80s, and 90s; my mind wanders back to those years with a sense of well-being. This Ebony is discounted a thousand times over, and that is what makes it special. I like it 👍, it’s the past returning, adapting to the present.

Sometimes the best discoveries aren’t found in luxury boutiques or famous brands, but in unexpected places. That was my experience with Ebony Wood, a fragrance I’d never heard of or seen hyped up. I’ll admit it: my expectations were low because my previous experiences with the brand had made it seem ordinary. But I simply stumbled upon it… or rather, it found me. In fact, my initial intention was to try another Zara recommendation that ended up left behind on the shelf. It was pure chance that I came across this creation, whose name suggested a dark, woody, and bold proposal. But what I found was something completely different… and for me, infinitely better. A pleasant surprise: upon application, I felt a vibrant, almost sparkling herbal burst, and thought: ‘basil, WTF!’. Although it’s not listed in its official pyramid, this aromatic impression is so distinct to me that I can’t help but associate it with basil. Perhaps due to the spiciness of the pink pepper (with clove nuances), a composition that intertwines with grapefruit and cypress, creating a spiced, fresh, and slightly wild opening. It is precisely this facet that makes me view it as a masculine fragrance, though with an elegance that, like any good creation, could transcend gender. Herbal tones, a touch of bitterness, and a softly sweet base, like a resinous veil that balances the whole without being cloying. Some perceive a faint incense, or even a hidden balsamic accord between layers. It is fairly linear in character, but not therefore monotonous; its olfactory signature remains vibrant and present from start to finish. This richness of nuances—spicy, dry, sweet, herbal, bitter—gives it an unexpected depth for its price range, making it one of the most interesting proposals in the collection, honestly, the most elegant in the entire brand’s catalogue. Ideal for autumn and winter, though it can also shine on cool nights of any season. But the most striking thing isn’t just its unexpected character, but the quality it conveys. It has body, it has intention, and possesses an olfactory signature that, if you didn’t know it came from Zara, you might attribute to a niche house. And the best part: its price is almost symbolic for what it offers. Thanks to Joanne Malone’s talent, Zara has found its own voice in perfumery. I hope they continue these collaborations! Although I suspect they will sell out soon and won’t be restocked.

  • It really hooks me, even though I’m not usually a fan of sweet perfumes. To me, it smells like fresh guava or that sweet guava preserve everyone loves.

  • Ebony Wood from Zara is the perfect fragrance if you like the idea of a freshly brewed coffee on a cold day. It’s spiced and woody with a touch of coffee that makes it special and addictive. Ideal for autumn and winter due to its warmth, but I’d use it all year round. It’s a scent that envelops you and makes you feel comfortable, perfect for everyday wear and work. Unisex, ideal for anyone with a casual and modern style.

  • With this fragrance Jo won my heart and I started following the brand to see what other hidden gems it has. It was my daily winter scent, ideal for cold days when you need a warm hug. The spicy grapefruit opening lasts just enough for a warm welcome. Then comes the coffee, necessary in the cold, but the vetiver keeps it fresh. I appreciate the vetiver because it alleviates the background patchouli. It smells expensive, distinct, and not for every nose.

  • I promised myself I wouldn’t try any more Zara perfumes due to performance and scent, until I was gifted a vial of Ebony Wood in an online purchase. As soon as I applied it, I felt the need to own the bottle. It’s addictive, delicate, and original, hard to associate with anything else. It has two phases: a citrus, sweet, and spiced opening that gives way to a light, sweet coffee mixed with woods. Everything is bright, soft, warm, and creamy, with an elegance rarely seen in low-cost fragrances. It’s versatile: I wouldn’t reserve it only for cold weather; its sweetness is delicate and the citrus note makes it suitable for a summer night. Performance is fair, but the scent is addictive and always worth it.

  • One of Zara’s that is definitely worth it. A particular, mysterious scent that reminds me of being in a forest. For its price in Europe it’s worth it; here in Argentina it’s very expensive.

  • For me, it’s a 10. If it were only available at Jo Loves or in niche, they’d be charging what they wanted. I don’t know if it’s inconsistency at Inditex, but it smells different on everyone. The initial citrus note used to shock me, but after macerating for months, it fades to reveal a light, ethereal, mysterious EDP based on cypress. The coffee is subtle, like an interlude, and pink pepper harmonises with the cypress. The vetiver and patchouli give it a clichéd ‘masculine’ touch, but this fragrance, though unisex, tends towards the feminine. The vibe depends on who wears it, which makes it unique despite being from Zara. Good fixative, doesn’t bother clothes (unlike Cocoa & Latte). Beautiful projection: limited trail but natural. Longevity improves with time: initially an hour, now the whole day (8-10 hours). Price: rose from 25.95 to 29.95 euros, but it’s still a laugh compared to designers. It’s a hidden gem distributed by Amancio Ortega at a laughable price. Go to your local Zara and try it.

  • Dami.perfumeman

Great perfume, although the opening isn’t the best: it’s sweet. But the dry down is incredible: long-lasting, projects well, and smells distinct, a scent people don’t usually have. In Spain it costs around 30 euros, a fantastic price. My advice: apply it 15 minutes before heading out. Everyone decides whether they like the opening or prefer to wait, but it’s subjective. 8/10.

  • manolochaos

Very rich, green, fresh, and sweet. What I smell most is cypress; it smells like walking through a forest. On my skin it lasts about four hours, but much longer on clothes. If you let it breathe for a few months, the longevity improves. I see it as versatile for all year round thanks to that fresh character. One of the best from Zara, despite the fact that their perfumes generally don’t last long.

  • Strong and slightly brassy opening, but the dry down is a different story: aromatic with a creaminess that softens everything. Not quite my style, but it’s not bad. I see it as unisex and super versatile for day and night, especially in cold weather.

  • Ebony Wood: Try it on, or even sleep in it. At first, that bitter grapefruit blend with woody and coffee notes hit me hard, but after 15 minutes it becomes delicious and clings to you all day. Dark, pure, and potent wood. The price is a steal; nothing like what designers charge for similar quality. It’s a complex, extravagant scent at the start, but once it dries down, you can’t help but fall in love with it.
