Ambre 114 by Histoires de Parfums is a spicy oriental fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2001, this composition was created by Gerald Ghislain, Magali Senequier and Sylvie Jourdet. The top notes feature a combination of nutmeg and thyme; the heart reveals patchouli, sandalwood, rose, geranium, cedar and vetiver; while the base notes complete the olfactory pyramid with amber, vanilla, benzoin, tonka bean and musk.

A fragrance that appears simple, wearable, classic, and timeless. It has the right spice, the right wood, the right amber, and the right balance, with impeccable transitions and very measured warmth. Basically, it is ambroxan amber and nutmeg with a balsamic accent, a drop of rose, and another of sandalwood; it seems little and needs nothing more. Everything is measured and tied from the start. There are many good ambers, but this is a reference to compare with any other for its mastery and complexity. Very good qualities, designed to dazzle with its beautiful simplicity. Simply, ‘Ambre 114’ is a flawless and seductive amber. Rating: 8
I think it’s a sensational perfume at an ‘affordable’ price in this niche market. The opening has a very good nutmeg, but soon it takes on that powdery sweetness of the amber, nothing grating or excessive, but elegant and well-blended with nuances. Although the intensity is not room-filling, at least I can smell it for many hours. One of my favourites.
Opening with nutmeg and then amber with vanilla. Smells good. It has that powdery air of MIP. Longevity and trail are good. More for night and winter. Not bad, but it doesn’t passion me.
Starts with nutmeg, then moves into amber and vanilla. Smells good, with that characteristic dusty vibe typical of MIP. The longevity and sillage are decent. More suited for evening and winter. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t really set my heart on fire.
A fragrance that will attract those who usually don’t pay attention to amber as well as its lovers. It heads towards the mythical Ambre Sultan, but with a delicious and seductive amber presence. The herbal notes of Ambre Sultan are attenuated here, making it easier to wear for beginners. Thyme and nutmeg are not off-putting; the thyme is more harmonious. The amber, as the protagonist, provides that spiced-sweet-balsamic sensation with a slightly dry or powdery touch, but without exaggeration, with a cared-for dose. It is a warm, organic sweetness that inspires confidence, with slight animalistic traits that are never uncomfortable, but a warm mix with a spicy support, gaining attraction with the vanilla-tonka combo. Ambre 114 surprises by being extremely well blended; its sweetness recedes to reveal resinous nature, patchouli, and vetiver. With good longevity and moderate trail, it is not the most potent amber, but it gifts you smiles and wraps you in cold days. Passion and warmth for lovers of amber, musk, vanilla, and spices.
HdP’s Ambre 114 (2001) and Serge Lutens’ Ambre Sultan (2000) are, without fear, the parents and mothers of today’s ambered fragrances. I loved Jerry Drake’s review for reflecting their differences: while AS is greener, imposing, and animalic, Ambre 114 is in perfect balance between sweet, spiced, balsamic, and aromatic, seeming like a ‘primordial’ amber that has it all. To my nose, nutmeg and refined thyme stand out over a dominant base of amber and vanilla. Sandalwood, rose, and benzoin give it density; patchouli and tonka bean make it slightly powdery, but always elegant, warm, and of tremendous quality. It evolves to become sweeter, less spiced, and slightly musky, with a contained animal note held back by that robust amber support. It is a true masterpiece: when I tried it, not only did my head spin, but I understood the archetype of many previous fragrances. Ideal use in cold weather, from semi-formal to formal, dates, and special occasions, with that conquering charm. Very good performance without being beastly and a price that is a bargain. Rating: 9.5/10
Ambre 114 is a great perfume according to my taste. It begins with thyme, geranium, nutmeg, and amber. As it dries down, cedar, vetiver, and a creaminess from tonka bean, vanilla, and amber emerge. The opening is potent, spiced, and woody, settling into a moderate but very persistent trail and projection. In the end, it becomes sweeter, ambered with a woody base. It reminds me greatly of Frederic Malle’s Musc Ravageur, but with better performance and less spice. In summary, I like it immensely: ideal for fresh seasons, for elegant dressing, undoubtedly unisex. It is sensual, serious, and mysterious, leaving no one indifferent. For people over 30. Timeless and kind, warm yet perfectly balanced. Its simplified complexity reminds me of great fragrances from decades past, with exquisite detailing. It’s very well constructed; while soft in the air, it creates an intimate bubble close to the skin that lasts six hours, fading slowly on the skin. I absolutely love it. For the £70 I paid, it’s a total bargain for the quality it conveys. An ambered oriental with just the right amount of sweetness, adding exactly what is needed. Exquisite and with its own character. Highly recommended.
Timeless, kind, warm and well-balanced. Its simplified complexity recalls great fragrances from decades ago, with fine craftsmanship. It’s very well constructed; while soft at a distance, up close it’s a bubble that lasts six hours, fading gradually. I love it. At €70, it’s a total bargain for the quality. An amber oriental with just the right amount of sweetness, delivering everything it promises. Exquisite and distinctive. Highly recommend giving it a try.
