Descripción

Ocaña by nBitor is a fragrance from the woody floral musk family, suitable for men and women. Launched in 2023, this composition is signed by perfumer Miguel Matos. The top notes unfold the freshness of orange blossom and cumin; the heart reveals a harmony between tiaré flower, yerba mate, neroli, tobacco, and carrot seeds; while the base settles on a warm and persistent foundation of vanilla, Siam benzoin, musk, costus, ambergris, and tonka bean.

Smells like an old-fashioned pharmacy. Very sweet and cloying, like burnt sugar and anise sweets. Pleasant smell, though somewhat flat. Notes of sweet licorice, perhaps coffee liqueur? It has a rancid and sweaty touch. 6/10.

  • Ocaña refers to José Pérez Ocaña, a reference in queer activism in the eighties, calling for sexual and gender disobedience. To reflect this, Miguel Matos uses sensual notes such as nard, with a decadent touch of cumin. The result is fantastic. The fragrance is dominated by tuberose alongside a tea note. The cumin, which can be pungent at first, is balanced with mastery, giving it uniqueness. It is another example of the perfumer’s talent in handling complex notes. Although it is deeply floral, the spicy touch makes it more unisex, rich, decadent and interesting for tuberose lovers. If you like Bortnikoff’s Wir Winston, think of that profile with a touch of cumin added. It’s rougher, but more interesting. Another success to try in the surprising nBitor line. Cheers.

Ocaña is an olfactory jewel from the prestigious nBitor line, an exquisite expression of a radical and cosmopolitan personality. This perfume, embodying rebellion and authenticity, is one of my favourites in the line, ideal for those seeking something that challenges convention. From the very first moment, Ocaña captivates with a penetrating yet sweet aroma, evoking an intense floral universe. The blend of orange blossom, neroli and tiare flower intertwines elegantly with warm touches of vanilla, tonka bean and benzoin resin, creating an experience that transports you to distant lands. What truly sets it apart are its daring notes: cumin adds a nuance of aged sweat, and costus contributes a bold note that defies expectations. These elements lend it an aura of originality. The heart of Ocaña beats to the rhythm of history and resistance, paying homage to José Pérez Ocaña, an icon of freedom in seventies Barcelona. His legacy of courage intertwines with the fragrance’s essence, reminding us of the importance of diversity. Ocaña, with its vibrant essence, invites us to celebrate individuality and express ourselves without fear. It is much more than a fragrance; it is a symbol of freedom and authenticity. With its unique blend and history, it represents the power of art and personal expression.

As others say, here the orange blossom and cumin stand out. A fairly indolic orange blossom (reinforced by the nardos) that results in something rather sordid when combined with the musky, sweaty cumin. The composition is very similar to ELDO’s Exprimentum Crucis, but with orange blossom instead of rose and without patchouli, so here it is a bit drier. I think you can also detect the yerba mate in the background, tilting the blend slightly towards the green, although it is very timid. It rules with white, a broken white but clearly white. It’s creamy, but a dirty creaminess, with lumps, very Raval.

Well put together; I stumbled upon it almost by chance at a friend’s house who collects perfumes. It’s not strictly necessary, but it helps immensely if you delve into the history of the man who inspired the scent (José Pérez Ocaña) via a book or website. I felt moved and prompted to reflect, rediscovering a nostalgia for a city I lived in years ago. It wasn’t the Barcelona of the Raval that Mr Ocaña must have known, nor the one hinted at in Ivá’s comics or Mendoza’s books; the Barcelona I knew was far from having its iconic neighbourhoods hijacked by a megashopping centre for tourists and lads who want to get drunk over a weekend in the Gothic Quarter wearing their Barça scarves. Ocaña smells of that rougher side that the inhabitants of the bohemian neighbourhoods back then had. Obviously, as a tribute, it aims to represent a specific sector of the scene and does so splendidly. Excellent work by Mr Matos; he deserves a pat on the back. It’s rough and, as another reviewer noted, has an indolic whiff that blends very well with the cumin. Orange blossom, cumin, costus and sweet notes yield to a human ensemble from its animal side. Projection and longevity are exactly what one would expect. Anyone can enjoy it, though I doubt it will appeal to the masses, including those who like to post about their progressive views. Highly recommended to give it a try.
