Descripción
Tu Te Calmes by Maison Matine is a woody-spicy fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2023, this olfactory composition was created by nose Bérénice Watteau. The top notes unfold a vibrant freshness thanks to neroli, citron and cardamom; the heart of the fragrance reveals the elegance of fig leaves and bitter orange; while the base notes anchor the essence with the depth of Haitian vetiver, Virginia cedar and musk.

It smells very similar to Loewe’s Paula’s Ibiza. I detect a touch of sea salt in it that the Loewe one also has. I like both. I want to wear one on each arm one day and compare them. At first, I think if you have one you don’t need the other, but I want to try and find their different nuances.
A neroli concept especially ‘kuki’, as if synthesised by a laboratory. All the characteristics of that note –tenderness, light, joy, welcome, family– are there from a conceptual and synthetic design of purity and calming cleanliness. It evokes an aura of wellbeing that perhaps explains its name: calm yourself down. Because yes or yes, this perfume so familiar, delicate, and ethereal is like a calming tea.
It’s a very original perfume, marine accord with tropical flowers (they aren’t on the list but I detect them). At first, it smells strongly of lemon oil, a sparkling citrus opening. Then I notice a bouquet of neroli and tiare where the green buds seem like seaweed (I think it comes from the mix of the fig’s green notes, petitgrain, and the aquatic note). This note reminds me sometimes of Acqua di Sale. It’s sweet due to the florals but also salty. As it dries down, a woody base is hinted at. Moderate trail and longevity of around 8 hours on my skin. I think I’ll love it for summer, daytime, and informal occasions, or perfect for an evening after the beach. Scent 7.5/10, Longevity 8/10, Trail 8/10, Value for money 8/10, Versatility 7/10, Packaging 10/10. Would I buy it again? Yes.
It shares a spirit with two perfumes I like, Loewe’s Paula’s Ibiza and Mugler’s Womanity, where the fig is secondary. It leans more towards the scaly, not-for-everyone vibe of Womanity: that strange note of freshly caught fish. It’s a balanced mix of rested citrus with fig having marine nuances that catch you. It’s relaxing and invites you to let yourself be carried away by its soft, summery presence. In the end, it calms the extravagant notes and settles into a clean scent.
It’s true it has the soul of Paula’s Ibiza and Womanity, those jewels with fig in the background. But it leans towards the scaly touch not for everyone in Womanity: that curious note of freshly caught fish, watch out for that. It’s a perfect balance between a rested citrus and a fig with a sea breeze, and it hooks you. It smells of relaxation and invites you to let yourself go with its soft, summery side. In the end, the odd notes calm down, leaving a clean and fresh scent.
I was really hoping I would like it, especially as it’s my first niche fragrance. The aesthetics, philosophy, and the fact that it’s cheaper than others convinced me. It’s unisex with a masculine tendency, but that’s not a problem. What I don’t like is how deeply bitter it is. The bergamot and cedar are very noticeable, and it literally smells like a very bitter artisan gin and tonic. It has disappointed me; I’m not saying it’s bad, simply it’s not for me.
I’m testing it with the small one from the Maison Matine Discovery Set (highly recommended). It’s my second bottle from the house, after Into the Wild, and I’m buying it to gift to my girlfriend, who also adores it. Along with Nature Insolente, they form my top 3. Pleasant aroma, unisex but with a feminine touch. Soft, fresh, relaxing opening: citrus and aromatic-sweet, subtly floral. Then it evolves, highlighting the fig and some spices without losing that citrus-sweet and slightly marine touch. Very cosy and friendly. Projection and longevity are moderate, around 5-6 hours. It has something of Paula’s Ibiza but softer and more personal, more citrusy and a bit sweeter, a step more tropical. As it dries down, it becomes a soft musk with woods that give body without being noticeable. Recommended for days, temperate climates, or air-conditioned environments, ideal for a hangover.
I’m testing it with the Maison Matine Discovery Set (a top gift and highly recommended). It’s my second bottle, after Into the Wild, and I’m buying it to gift to my girlfriend, who already tried it and loved it. Along with Nature Insolente, they’re my top 3 from the house. It smells great, unisex but with a feminine touch. The opening is soft, fresh, relaxing, and calming: slightly citrusy and aromatic-sweet, with a tiny floral note. Then it evolves towards the aromatic, highlighting the soft fig and some spices, without losing that sweet-citrus marine base. It’s very cosy and kind. Projection and longevity are moderate but acceptable, around 5-6 hours. Although it reminds me a bit of Paula’s Ibiza, it’s softer and has its own personality to avoid being redundant: more citrusy and a little sweeter, a couple of steps more tropical. When it dries down, it becomes a soft musk, with woods that give body but which I don’t notice. Recommended for daytime and temperate or hot climates, or with controlled temperature. Ideal for a hangover day.
Figuwood usually scares me, but here it’s a revelation. It’s dangerous, like a monkey with a machine gun trapping you in its splinters and sinking into your lungs, just like an insect in amber. With other fig scents this happens, but with Tu Te Calmes the opposite occurs. The wood density is well-spaced, and the citrus and floral notes act as a god separating his children. It remains green, spring-like, softly fruity but not edible. It doesn’t smell of meat, nor is it cold; it’s cordial and affable, the smile of a waiter attending to you, the joy of the first musical number in an animated film when the whole town sings its routine.
Fig wood usually scares me, but here I love it. It has danger, like a monkey with a machine gun trapping you between its branches and diving down to your lungs, just like an insect in amber. That happens with other fig perfumes, but not here. The density of the wood is well-spaced and the citrus and floral notes separate everything. It comes across as green, spring-like, softly fruity but not edible. It’s not carnal, nor is it cold; it’s cordial, friendly – the smile of a waiter or the joy of the first song in an animated film.
I tried it today for the first time with the discovery set. Although my opinion is premature, I think I would buy it. It smells clean and warm at the same time, very pleasant. The trail isn’t huge, but it lasts a long time; I put it on at 6 and now it’s 15 and it’s still there.
It doesn’t suit me, but my partner absolutely loves it and has already finished the bottle. On their skin, it smells fantastic – super fresh and bitter, just like a gin and tonic.
