  A citrus freshness with an elegant heart that evokes something woody. I read a description mentioning the smell of a freshly opened box of pencils. It’s a rather poetic and accurate description because the iris root note has that ability to draw wood where there isn’t any. It’s an herbal ingredient that brings sobriety and distinction whenever it appears. In this case, the iris root together with the musk and the citrus part result in a fresh and luminous fragrance very common with a touch of really beautiful natural elegance. The contradiction works.

  For now, Esprit de Contradiction could be one of the most child-friendly fragrances in the collection, but it suits adults perfectly. First, what a good bite of mandarin on opening, a realistic note that lasts almost the whole life. Then, well: a very fresh, linear bathroom scent, ideal for summer and for feeling in a good mood, without complications, thanks to its slightly salty (unlisted) crisp note and the festival of tied citrus notes. It’s very pleasant, but the trail and longevity are very skin-scented.

  A gin-tonic top note with a muted iris dry-down. It leaves a neutral, musky blend, very correct and wearable, just like everything from Maison Matine. If you’re not like me, if you don’t enjoy the eccentric or fear scaring people, perhaps you should pay attention to this house. It depresses me a little, though it smells luxurious and comforting. Like an airport in an advert or a bed and breakfast. The potato note is light and crisp. It makes me think of what they say about when the potato arrived in the Old World, some experimental nobles serving it raw, in petals forming roses. Then people would get indigestion. Still, with a good gin-tonic, things would have gone down better.

  A musky base with iris and that strange yet sticky scent from the iris root. While it smells soft and would suit a child, it’s my different bet, far from the typical citrus of this type. I plan to wear it to the bathroom, just like other scents from this house that don’t bother anyone and are loved by all.
