An Air de Paris Spicy, formerly Gentlemen, remains an elegant masculine classic. Upon application, the initial laurel note is strong for a second before everything fits together perfectly; the notes emerge and fade at just the right moments. It opens with laurel, nutmeg and geranium with a citrus touch, then nutmeg takes centre stage with natural basil, and the castor note appears – the best part of the scent. It finishes with cedar and sandalwood. It stays true to its spiced and woody theme, and although it has a slight citrus hint, it doesn’t smell dry or suffocating like others. I like that it feels homemade, without exotic essences, championing old-fashioned spices. The downside is that it’s very serious: it smells like a Nordic gentleman in a grey suit and ironed shirt on a cloudy autumn day, lacking passion. I love the quality, especially the basil. The trail isn’t huge, but it lasts around six to eight hours as it should.
