I’d been wanting to try it for ages; at first, I thought it was a myth because it doesn’t appear on the official Aquolina website (Pink Sugar) and nobody knew anything. One day, bottles magically appeared on eBay and the splits arrived. It remains a mystery to me. It smells like burnt rubber, leather jacket, cotton candy, and a bit of incense. I don’t know how to detect the Oud note, perhaps it’s that medicinal smell at the beginning that later disappears. I’ve only used it twice; my friends say it smells like incense and my mum says it smells like rubbish. It definitely has the Pink Sugar DNA in the base. It’s peculiar, and I’d get a bottle if they were 50ml (I’ve only seen 100ml), because the others in this line are 50ml and I’d be in trouble. It was super entertaining to see how Aquolina wasn’t left behind, adding Oud even to the soup.
It’s curious: I like most of Aquolina’s fragrances, but Black Sugar is rare. What I didn’t like was the leather, perhaps because my uncle used it a lot and I detest it. I saw it on Mercado Libre and didn’t hesitate to buy it; I didn’t remember it had leather and felt happy to find it, as it’s very rare. I wanted to like it because the blend of vanilla, incense, raspberry, and Oud tempted me immensely, and oh, disappointment! It’s a pity given how much I wanted it. I ended up gifting it away.
At first, it smells sweet, but after five minutes, it drifts into a leather that reminds me of synthetic belts, very pleasant and hypnotic. I sense a delicious but soft wood note; if it’s Oud, I’m joining the fans because I love it. Or it could be a superior blend of sandalwood over Oud, which would give it that sweet touch that drifts into raspberry. Highly recommended; instinctively, I would seek out a girl with this scent, very good.
It’s the rebellious, dark sister of Pink Sugar: the same cotton candy sweetness, but here it’s not in the listed notes. It’s accompanied by leather and incense that make it smoky and sensual, nothing childish or tender like the original. In the base, there’s vanilla, a playful raspberry, and a fun acidity. It also has the famous Oud, although I still can’t detect it. It leaves a huge trail and lasts about 10 hours on my skin.
I like Black Sugar, but I don’t love it. Undoubtedly, it keeps the spirit of its sister, Pink Sugar. It’s a very dense, dark sweetness, as if the cotton candy had gone past the caramel point and burnt; that’s how I perceive Black Sugar. From the moment you spray it, everything is noticeable: vanilla, incense, and leather dominate. Although it’s for women, men wear it too. It evokes strength, rebellion, roughness, and lots of personality. Although by a country mile I prefer Pink Sugar, Black Sugar has its own merits to stand out.
Pure curiosity when I tried it blind, and puff, what a powerhouse! At first, it overwhelmed me as I applied too much; it’s dense and I felt a bit suffocated, but then I fell in love with that smoky touch, like burnt sugar over wood, deep and unusual, exactly what I was looking for. The myrrh and incense, known for bringing peace and meditation, work beautifully, closing with leather and vanilla. At first, I thought it was for men, but in the end, it’s for strong, bold women. It’s worth it: it’s cheap, lasts over six hours, and reminds me of the woody smoke in Maison Margiela By The Fireplace, but at a bargain price.
