  • The promotional video for BRUMMEL COUPÉ DE PUIG has to be seen to be believed; it’s a mix of macho vulgarity, Almodóvar’s film ‘Matador’ with Assumpta Serna, and a Formula 1 awards ceremony, which I don’t know whether has unintentional humour or none at all. The fragrance is well-placed in the Aromatic Fougère family, almost aquatic due to its oceanic nuances. It’s what is known as a classic men’s cologne: a woody, mossy, aquatic and country effect that evokes the seventies. The opening has the typical bitterness of a fougère, but without the harshness of old times; it’s softer and suits current tastes (at least as of 2011, the date on my bottle). I like it and it only faintly reminds me of the classic Brummel, which smells more citric and floral, like a barber’s shop. The aquatic note of Calone gives that oceanic, ozonic and salty effect. The turquoise blue bottle recalls marine tones. There are hints of thyme, sage and lavender that linger in a long, lasting dry-down, something I didn’t expect from a Brummel. It’s a nice body wash with moderate projection and prolonged longevity, perfect for stepping out of the bathroom with a feeling of cleanliness, freshness, sporty elegance and relaxed classicism. I don’t usually use this type of cologne, but I wouldn’t mind using it more. The quality-price ratio is as good as in many Puig fragrances, most of which have disappeared in favour of other brands. Puig Group should have maintained the Spanish perfumery cultural heritage. How difficult it is to combine art with money! So many geniuses creating masterpieces while mere money-grubbers only think of getting rich until money means nothing. It’s the whirlpool of power and wealth, a drug that never satisfies.

  • It’s a very good cologne overall. It resembles the original but is much sportier and more versatile. It doesn’t have great longevity, but it outperforms the current version of Brummel Original; on my skin it lasts easily 3 to 4 hours, with an incredible trail for the first 30 minutes that fades gradually. After an hour (around 80-90 minutes), I can barely smell it anymore. For its price, I consider it highly recommended, especially if you like the original scent but are looking for something more modern.

  • I’m buying it again and have already reserved some for the future. It always reminded me of Puig’s ‘Boston’, but also of something I couldn’t identify until a casual comment revealed it: a blue shaving flanker of ‘Vorago’, the ‘Vorago Action’. What a pity that Puig sold their classics instead of keeping and updating them. Brummel Coupé is a fortunate change, with good projection and longevity; it smells more like the nineties than the eighties, aquatic and sporty yet potent with a formal touch.
