Where? When? And for how much? I am eagerly awaiting the news.
Thank you for letting me know, LaDamedeNoir. I imagine it will not be the same in this era of reformulations, but I loved it so much that I would settle for something approximate. I also take this opportunity to congratulate you on how well you write and to say that I read all your reviews. Best wishes.
It has not arrived in Argentina yet. I would love to try it, as in the 80s it was one of the most beautiful perfumes. Let us hope the reformulation is good (with rare exceptions, I believe reformulations destroy a fragrance). It is a pity the bottle is not as beautiful as the one from the 80s; it is rather simple. We shall have to try it.
I do not understand what drives Rochas, a pioneer in packaging that was small works of art like the original Lumiere and Byzance, to destroy that legacy with bland, uninspired bottles lacking any visual concept.
It cannot be found anywhere. I live in Guatemala and travel constantly to the US and Mexico, and I have not been able to get hold of it because I cannot find it. It is a pity that Rochas has taken this fabulous fragrance off the market. It was my favourite until I could no longer get it. I hope they will manufacture it again.
I just bought it in Spain. You can get it on the website La Central del Perfume at an incredible price!!!
It feels like too much beauty to be genuine, as reformulations are never as glorious as the originals. This perfume was a work of art, one of Rochas’ most beautiful creations, and I doubt they will ever bring back something so magnificent. I still need to try it and give it my approval. I would love for it to be what it was, one of the most exquisite fragrances we had the privilege of smelling. I hope I am not disappointed, but the truth is, I don’t believe they can replicate the mystical magic of such a delicious scent. The bottle is the Madame Rochas version; it is lovely, but they could have made an even more beautiful one.
I just bought it in Spain. You can acquire it on the website La Central del Perfume at an incredible price.
I would also like to try this reformulation, who knows when it will come to my country. Although reformulations give me a little fright. Apart from the mass market, I do not understand the macabre reason for reformulating iconic jewels like Byzance. I understand they want to focus on a public eager for flat fruity scents, and that is fine, let them continue. But, please, do not reformulate good perfumes! Simply launch ‘fruity-light’ flankers. Why ruin what is already well made? For my compatriot Natalia or anyone else wishing to buy it, if you travel to the US, you can order online from Fragrancenet or FragranceX and give your hotel address. I have bought from both and so far have had no problems: they are authentic. There are still discontinued perfumes available there. Best regards!
Do you know the advice not to rub your wrists when applying perfume? With Byzance EDT, I rub them thoroughly. I do not like its sharp aldehydic opening. Casablanca gifted me a sample, and I even felt bad telling them it did not convince me. So much vintage aldehyde, like a sour softener, that it obscures the rest. After a while, surprise: a powdery, lilac and blue scent, elegant and very comfy. Truly lovely. Today I am seeing it for the second time and have rubbed my wrists to activate the evolution. I do not like the opening, but now, an hour and a half later, I smell blessed glory. I believe it is the heliotrope: a dusty, lilac aroma with memories of blueberry and moisturiser. Elegant, sober, and beautiful like a haute couture dress. Its list of accords is almost indiscernible; I only perceive ugly aldehydes at first and then a wonderful, well-blended powdery floral. Although it requires time, I like it. I recommend trying it and I would love to know the evolution in others.
Do you know that bit of advice about not rubbing your wrists when applying perfume to avoid muddling the olfactory pyramid? Well, with Byzance EDT, I rub them in thoroughly. I just don’t like its sharp, aldehydic opening. Casablanca gifted me a sample, thinking I might enjoy it; I applied it and even felt awkward telling them it wasn’t for me. It’s got a very vintage aldehyde vibe, like sour fabric softener, which I feel obscures the other notes. After a while (quite a while, actually), what a surprise: a powdery scent, lilac and blue, elegant and very ‘comfy’. Truly lovely. I’ve worn it twice today and rubbed my wrists to trigger the evolution. I still dislike the opening, but right now (an hour and a half later), I smell like pure bliss. I think it’s heliotrope: a dusty, lilac aroma with hints of blueberry and moisturiser. Elegant, understated and beautiful like a high-fashion gown. Simply beautiful. Its listed accords (spices, carnation, neroli) are almost indiscernible to my nose, which only detects nasty aldehydes at first, followed by a wonderful, well-blended powdery floral scent. It takes time, but I like it. I highly recommend trying it and would love to hear about the evolution on other people.
Byzance 2017 is a worthy reissue that has come to me through that same hunger for beauty the original from 1987 possessed. Thanks to someone I deeply admire, I have fallen in love with this exquisite creation forever. After 30 years, Rochas has made a tremendous effort to bring it back, because releasing a perfume like this today is incredibly difficult. For now, with Byzance, they are doing a good job. Other reissues did not receive the welcome they deserved, but they are back with this masterful legacy. The perfume has an unexpected opening: sharp, bright, and citrusy, which has me completely smitten. Any morning is a beautiful occasion to wear this vintage specimen. It has a clean resolution; perhaps on noses sensitive to aldehydes it resonates strongly, but that is how it presents the vitality of a bold pepper that maintains its clarity through all stages. After that aldehyde opening, wonderful flowers emerge: a soapy neroli from head to toe, what beauty it has when it emulates soaps of the past. In the heart and base, there is less creaminess than the original; it is less romantic and tender, but it has powdery fragments of heliotrope. It presents itself as brighter, sparkling, and faithful to what it was. It is the perfume of a woman who fights life, always smiling, seeing the positive, and finding beauty in everything. She does not give in to injustice, feels secure, and stands tall when others fall. That is she and her Byzance 2017, resurrected to demonstrate that perfumery needs corners of respect and learning. Phoenix birds must have their space. Beauties that contributed splendidly to art cannot be extinguished. Even if it changes, there must be spaces where perfume does not lose dignity, because if it does, it becomes a tarnished memory. Memories must be faithful. Bravo to Rochas!
