  Andrea Maack Coal isn’t quite a masterpiece, but in a shop full of gems it stopped me in my tracks. It smells like something you already know but with its own twist, especially when dry: it’s as if all the notes come together all at once. I see it as 100% masculine, dry and spicy; at the start it’s cedar and raw pepper, nothing sweet. If you like cedar, you’ll get off to a good start, but the magic lies in the dry-down: the cedar calms down, blending with leather, papyrus and a touch of acidic citrus. After two hours, only a relaxing, almost sweet sandalwood remains. The coal is noticeable, reminiscent of woods with burning incense, but here it’s more like burnt wood—a dry, hard-to-explain sensation that nonetheless works. Longevity and quality: just approved without the price being excessive. It lasts four or five hours, which could be better, and the trail is quite low.
