Roccobarocco is a designer who has gifted true jewels in the past, very different from one another but sharing a common thread: excellent longevity and outstanding personality. Anyone who has had the opportunity to savour one of his creations cannot deny the elegance and sophistication emanating from each bottle upon spraying. Behind his unique creations always lay inspiration, curiosity, innovation, and he was a role model for many other artisans competing in his sector. Joint Femme is an olfactory journey in first-class seating, a collector’s perfume designed for true lovers of the world of aromas. It is the perfume that emanates from a muse sitting in a field of flowers while the painter attempts to immortalise that magical moment when the model and artist connect deeply. Elegant and beautiful from the outset, it settles on the skin like a juicy brushstroke of aldehydes, muguet, and eloquent jasmine – delicate yet extremely present – before embracing in the final stage a sandalwood that dissolves into a fantastic powdery, talc-laden environment. In the heart notes, it offers moments of grand beauty, sophisticated yet simple, as if showing you the charm of the simple things that surround us. Magic.
Where to begin… First and foremost, thank you to jerry drake for the chance to try such a hard-to-find fragrance today. When Joint first launched, I was a child. The truth is, I’m not sure if it was easy to get hold of in Spain, yet that vibe from the late 80s and early 90s feels familiar – ostentatious, baroque, intoxicating, and characterful perfumes. What kind of women would wear Joint? I imagine a Tess McGill from Working Girl: a fighter, non-conformist, and ambitious, awaiting just recompense for her effort and talent. If such women existed in reality, I suppose I missed out on them. As I grew up, I found myself in a world devoid of hope, far removed from that era when we believed in progress and so many other things that never came to pass. Blessed were the years before 2001! Perhaps the extinction of the type of woman who would wear Joint can explain, in some way, the extinction of this type of perfume. Few have survived until today. Maroussia is one of them, Samsara a distant cousin. Joint is more cheerful and luminous than these two, but a combination of both would be an approximation of it. That characteristic sandalwood found in Samsara, that generosity with florals (I believe there’s more than just jasmine and muguet here) that recall honey, sweet and animalic. This perfume has that touch of worn knickers belonging to a great lady (very well-groomed, of course). Vanilla is also very present, but not a gourmand vanilla; it provides the perfect sweetness to complement the florals. It’s a lovely perfume, one I would never wear, simply because I’m not that woman with hopes, ambitions, and talent etc. It feels too big for me, and I’m annoyed that it is! How fortunate is the woman for whom it fits like a glove, and her loved ones!
Take off your shoes and follow me. We’re in a garden filled with jasmine, lilies, and white flowers. An intoxicating, magical, beautiful garden – I even see a rainbow… but wait, in the distance there’s a fence and beyond it, a forest. Shall we jump? Of course. Now we venture into a mysterious, deep, surprising, and intriguing forest. A wolf watches us from afar. It’s an adult wolf, calm, perfectly aware of who it is and knowing it’s on its territory. You cannot escape its immense presence. It approaches and accompanies us – perhaps I’d say it guides us. It’s not frightening, but it’s cunning; it’s a wolf. We walk together, and upon reaching the other side of the forest, it looks at us and departs. We’ve arrived. Now we’re in a damp, warm, and comforting place. I choose to live here. Forever. Opinions on a perfume are a crucible. When I read that these ‘vintage’ perfumes are for ‘older ladies’, I don’t realise how happy it makes me to be an ‘older lady’. Afterwards, I put on my 501s, my leather jacket, my insane-heeled ankle boots, my Joint, and hop on my motorbike. I’ll never thank jerry drake enough for the opportunity to try this marvel.
I’ll admit it: at first, it hit me hard – very metallic (aldehydes, surely) with an animalic touch, reminiscent of amber or flowers steeped in honey. But once that initial phase passes, the white florals emerge alongside the musk, creating a warmth that perhaps reinforces that amber note I detected earlier. To all of this is added the sandalwood and a vanilla base; on my skin, all the notes emerge simultaneously, each with its own nuances. It evokes the 90s and their potent perfumes, with echoes of the 80s. Thank you, dear @jerry drake, for gifting me this sample and allowing me to discover this side of perfumery, which is sadly disappearing.
