I have no proof, nor any doubt, that they copied the bottle from YSL’s M7… that fragrance which, as far as I’ve read, was the one that brought oud to Western commercial perfumery. I don’t know much about what’s considered an oriental fragrance; in my head, when I hear the word ‘oriental’, I think of spices… but there’s none of that here. If I had to quickly define Oriental Dream, I’d describe it as a sweet fruity scent. For me, the blackcurrant note is the star here, and around that axis, galbanum spins first, followed by amber. There are more nuances, but that’s the part I feel most. The initial freshness/greenness fades quickly, and it’s the sweetness that takes centre stage. It’s not cloying; it’s like the sweetness of fruit, not overwhelming. In the dry-down, the amber takes more prominence, giving the blackcurrants a toasted touch that I’ve loved. That final part (especially close to the skin) is very, very similar to Mugler’s Angel. I see Oriental Dream as quite, if not totally, unisex. Normally I find this with fruity notes. As for performance, that’s its weak point. It’s true it has good longevity on skin (I can still smell it perfectly after 12 hours), but in terms of projection, it’s quite shy. The first half-hour projects well, then for about four hours you get bursts, but after that, it drops to skin scent. The good thing is that close to the skin it does smell, and for my taste, it’s an addictive and seductive aroma (I’m a fan of Angel’s DNA), so it could perform well on dates. Overall, I highly recommend it at its official launch price (20-30€)… I wouldn’t pay more for it, because although it’s ultra-rare to find, it just lacked a bit more projection for me. I’d also recommend it if you like the blackcurrant note or are looking for something similar to Mugler’s Angel (in the dry-down).
