Oriental Soul is easy for those who love sweetness. On Fragantica.com it’s compared to Heliotrope Reminiscence and carries that constant note. On my skin, in its final phase, it recalls Al Contrario by T.T.: it lacks cocoa, yet reflects its warmth and heavy powder effect, eventually turning into a creamy vanilla. It isn’t quite as dark, but it constantly nods to that perfume. At first, it’s slightly alcoholic but hardly annoying; being a fragrance that has aged, it feels denser than at launch. I detect no clear citrus or florals, only a very syrupy peach from the vanilla or chocolate. What defines this fragrance is its excessive sweetness: a potion of vanilla, cocoa, amber, and benzoin that leaves you blind. There’s little evolution, so best to enjoy what it gives: lust, killer, gourmand. The smoky touch of benzoin adds elegance. The trail is just right, thank you; on other skins or eras it might project more, but for me, strict gourmands tend to stay close to the skin. A spiced oriental usually projects more, and I’ve noticed many vanillas last long but project little. It may be highly appreciated by vanilla lovers; I even see it as more complete than other pricier perfumes in the segment. If you’re seeking an overdose of sweetness, you’ll be pleased. Edit: those who have mouths make mistakes… on clothes with about six sprays it smells delicious, a creamy chocolatey vanilla with a constant lasting a few hours. I do note the heliotrope… and beware of clothes, as it stains like Alien Essence, leaving a yellow trail on the skin.

  • Ángel Schlesser, the Cantabrian designer who started with clothing in the 80s and moved into perfumes in the 90s, offers supermarket fragrances with delusions of grandeur: pricier than Domínguez or Banderas, yet within reach of tight budgets. His brand now faces the same fate as other Spanish designers who either die out or are forgotten in their lifetime. Oriental Soul Pour Femme is pure artifice: vanilla, vanilla, and more synthetic vanilla. It’s that love-hate scent, akin to Joop! Homme or Fantasy, utterly one-dimensional and cloyingly sweet. Imagine a vanilla so oversweetened and sharp it would send a diabetic into a coma without insulin, perhaps with hints of peach, freesia, and amber. It shows no evolution or fade; it lasts like Duracell batteries on my skin and clothes. It’s a marvel of performance, but beware the dose, for it becomes a roaming diabetic vanilla ready for a nervous breakdown. Still, I adore it; it has that mad, psychedelic, methamphetamine-like, Manson Family vibe from Wonderland.
