Terror & Magnificence by BeauFort London is an olfactive fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2019, this composition features the olfactory signature of Pia Long. The top notes unfold birch tar, black pepper, and saffron; the heart reveals incense, tobacco, and Egyptian papyrus; while the base notes complete the structure with Haitian vetiver, myrrh, myrrh, bdellium, benzoin, and pebbles.

I admit it smells good and lasts a long time, but it’s not my style. I know that smoky scents are in fashion, but this seems excessive to me. I’ve had the whole day with the sensation of having spent the night in Ana Juan surrounded by bonfires. The incense is very potent and smells like something burnt (perhaps tar). As those notes dominate so much, I haven’t felt anything else. I didn’t pick up the balsamic part (benzoin, labdanum…) behind that smell of fire. It reminds me a lot of City on Fire by Imaginary Authors or Bonfire by Martín Manglía. Olfactorily it is very well done, but I simply don’t like smelling like that. Scent: 5, Longevity: 8, Trail: 6, Value for money: 5, Versatility: 4, Originality: 9, Overall: 6
I admit it smells good and lasts a long time, but it’s not my style. I know that the smoky aroma is in fashion, but this seems excessive to me. I’ve had the whole morning with the sensation of having spent the entire night surrounded by bonfires. The incense is very potent and has a smoky touch that I’m not sure is tar. As those notes dominate so much, I couldn’t perceive anything else, not even the balsamic part of the benzoin or labdanum, which gets lost behind that feeling of fire. Smells like an old library or a church; on my skin, the incense, papyrus and smoke really stand out. Like most of Beaufort’s fragrances, it’s complex and suited only for special occasions or cold days. Very potent and long-lasting. If you enjoy intense smoky and woody scents, this is your choice. Scent: 7, Longevity: 9, Price: 7, Sillage: 8, Overall: 7.
It smells like an old library or a church; on my skin, the incense, papyrus, and smoke dominate. Like almost everything from Beaufort, it is a difficult perfume to wear, only for special occasions and cold days. Very potent and long-lasting on skin. If you like intense smoky and woody aromas, it is a good option. Scent: 7, Longevity: 9, Price: 7, Trail: 8, Overall: 7
One of my first niche discoveries, a true perfumazo. I decided after reading Eduardo García de Alba; my style is dark, so I didn’t hesitate a second and ordered a decant from my dealer in Guatemala. The opening is impactful: a sensation of a crypt, absolute terror but deliciously intense. After 10 minutes, it changes to dark wood and a wet forest. Then, another 30 minutes, the extreme elegance of ‘Magnificence’ arrives, rivaling or surpassing Dior Homme Parfum with a pure woody character. Finally, in 2 or 3 hours, the incense, myrrh, and benzoin transport you to an ancient church with a sacred, old air. It is an art jewel. Curiously, two comments asked about that elegant scent and said they felt like they were in a procession. Longevity: 8 to 10 hours, more than enough. Rating: 10/10. The bottle is on its way. For lovers of the dark, buy blind. If you are not used to this type of fragrance, you probably won’t like it.
A great disappointment with the Discovery set; it seems like a scam. These perfumes are not for classy everyday wear, but difficult olfactory experiences to use. There is a type who talks about the house as if it were ‘super niche’ and it makes me laugh; instead of being objective, he seems like an enthusiastic salesman. Terror & Magnificence is an expensive experience, not a costly one, because the price is ridiculous compared to other niche or artisanal houses. The longevity, projection, and sillage are mediocre, and nobody wants to smell like fresh cement expecting compliments. Don’t be fooled by fake reviews; many YouTubers make such videos to receive gifts. Don’t trust liars like Andres Mentiras Man or Apestame Mucho. Try, try, and try again because there is too much hype and many lost gems.
A major disappointment. I bought the Discovery Set and it feels like a scam. These perfumes aren’t for everyday wear nor do they convey class; they’re merely difficult olfactory experiences. One of my first niche discoveries. Total fragrance bomb. I read the reviews and went for Eduardo García de Alba’s notes. My style is dark; while I own some everyday scents, I have a real preference for this kind of aroma. I ordered the decant without hesitation. The opening transported me to a crypt: terror for some, absolute delight for me. Dark wood and wet forest notes for the first thirty minutes, followed by an elegance surpassing Dior Homme Parfum. Finally, the cycle of incense, myrrh, and benzoin, just like in an ancient church. A piece of art. Lasts eight to ten hours. Rating 10. For those with a taste for the dark, buy blind; for others, it simply won’t appeal.
A weak proposal from BeauFort: stripping away the pretty prose that accompanies each perfume, it is rich and different for only 20 minutes, with a smoky, green, cold part; that is the most special note. But after 20 minutes, everything falls away and it remains a smoky and tarred perfume, like any BeauFort base with nothing else, with less performance than other scents from the brand. Rating: 4.6/10
A weak offering from Beaufort. Stripping away the flowery prose, it’s rich and different for only about 20 minutes, with smoky, green and cold notes being the most special part. Then it fades and settles into a typical smoky and tar-like base characteristic of the brand, with less performance than others. Rating: 4.6/10.
Imagine entering St Vitus Cathedral in the Czech Republic on a rainy, cold day, with high ceilings, a dark temple, and centuries-old incense. For the uninitiated, this might be impenetrable, but for those seeking a smile at a perfume, it is a precious and purposeful discovery, one that makes you say ‘wow, what a perfume’. It is gothic and masculine, except for emo women or those interested in the dark. I adore it. Sufficient longevity and average trail; it doesn’t reach the titanic power levels of Iron Duke, but it doesn’t need to. Ideal for cold climates.
Stepping into St Vitus Cathedral on a rainy, chilly day, with high vaulted ceilings and the scent of ancient incense, sounds impossible for newcomers, but it’s a magical discovery for anyone seeking a smile. It’s exquisite, full of character, and makes you shout ‘wow’. Gothic and masculine, unless you’re an emo girl or a lover of the dark. I adore it. The longevity is more than enough and the sillage is moderate; it doesn’t reach the power levels of Iron Duke, but it doesn’t need to. Perfect for cold climates.
If you’ve read ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Eco or seen the film, you’ll remember the secret library of the abbey, full of forbidden books that the monks hid because knowledge threatened God. Terror and Magnificence smells exactly like that: damp, mossy stones, millennia-old dusty manuscripts, and liturgical incense. Never has a perfume mixed the sacred and the profane, the holy and the sinful, so well. A true wonder that I will buy again until God (or the Devil) decides.
If you’ve read ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Eco or seen the film, you’ll remember the secret library of the abbey, packed with forbidden books that the monks hid out of fear of God. Terror and Magnificence smells exactly like that place: damp, mouldy stones, dusty manuscripts, and liturgical incense. Never before has a perfume blended the sacred and the profane, the holy and the sinful, so perfectly. An absolute masterpiece that I’ll keep buying until God or the Devil decides otherwise.
If you don’t like smoky perfumes or strange avant-garde proposals, it’s not worth trying. If you are already familiar with this house and its compositions, this perfume is in the same line as Tonnerre, Iron Duke, Vit et Armis… and perhaps it won’t surprise you as much, although for me it has its own beauty. It fits within its line of smoky spicy scents; I’d say it has a more herbal dimension than the previous ones, something dry and metallic, perhaps due to the vetiver accord. The rest is what we already know: an original smoky scent surrounded by exploding pepper that drags other spices along with it. On my part, I must confess that I like any perfume from this house, even if their experiments with smoky notes can seem repetitive. It is the perfume of Joan of Arc.
I’ve tried several from the house before and was expecting something more turbid, but it’s nowhere near that. The opening is intense and puts you on guard: full-on tar and plenty of spices make the start a bit of a shocker… but that’s where it stops. It lasts only a few minutes. Shortly after, something different begins to emerge. Something sweet and ambered. That tarred opening evaporates, leaving from that moment onwards a simpler, less exhausting fragrance. An amber note that adds creaminess and sweetness, moving it away from terror and closer to normality. What remains is a smoky, incense-like, resinous scent. I’d say the panic subsides and a simpler darkness remains, one that is comforting. I liked it quite a lot, although I wouldn’t buy it right now as I prefer another option from the brand. Unisex (terror knows no gender), good performance, and, needless to say, demands cold and darkness. Quite wearable, honestly. It would be good to start with Beaufort. Just don’t ask for versatility…
