It’s a gem: exquisite, gentlemanly, elegant and nocturnal, ideal for a gala. My partner doesn’t suit it, so I keep it in my cabinet like a treasure, ready to go out, silent and with that James Bond air that inspired it.
A classic of the classics, supposedly Ian Fleming’s favourite. They say what he imagined of his son, the literary Bond, was reflected in him: a complex personality, a reputation for womanising, difficult, hard, selfish, yet intelligent with a fascinating kindness that made him very attractive, despite his misogyny. The difference is that Bond was cruel and violent, something Fleming detested. Raised in a wealthy family, he loved smoking, drinking, luxury cars, and seducing ladies with this cologne. No. 89 is a proper barbershop cologne: clean, elegant, revitalising and discreet, just what you’d expect from a classic English gentleman of the early 20th century. Today it feels anachronistic; it serves more as a complement to formal attire and attitude, far from today’s relaxed youth style. If you read his books and biography, you’ll understand why Floris No. 89 suited father and son. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have an open mind. I like it, but it’s not a priority purchase for me.
The ultimate classic. They say it was Ian Fleming’s favourite perfume, the creator of Bond; it seems part of what he imagined in the hero was reflected in the author. Starts citrusy with a bitter touch; lavender takes the lead, then dries down to a very powdery finish with that classic barbershop scent. It’s elegant, but better suited for everyday wear rather than formal events. Longevity and projection are low—it fades quickly into a scent bubble.
A citrus opening with a slightly bitter edge where lavender is the co-protagonist, finishing with a powdery dry-down and that typical barbershop scent. It’s very elegant, but more suitable for everyday wear than formal events. Longevity and projection are low; it fades quickly into a scent bubble.
