The comments on this fragrance aren’t very good; they say it opens citrusy with more freshness than the EDT, but it seems there’s an interval where you can hardly smell anything, to finish with stronger base notes. I think if you already know or use the Habit Rouge EDT, this isn’t necessary. It’s more suitable for younger people who don’t know the original and could start with it. I also don’t think a review of a fragrance should be done by another nose that didn’t create the original perfume; it usually doesn’t yield good results, as happened with the Déclaration cologne by Cartier. A fresh or intense review is always more reliable if it’s the creator who does it… I’m not going to buy it.
This new reinterpretation of the legendary Habit Rouge has outstanding longevity on my skin, with evident projection for over six hours. The aroma impresses me favourably, with a daring and variable sophistication, nothing linear. It starts with that bitter orange citrus opening, criticised by some, but which seduces me. Quickly, a breath of natural, healthy jasmine joins in that fascinates me at 20 minutes. After hours, the mix of oranges and jasmine becomes powdery and creamy; I also detect some roses that border on the feminine, which doesn’t bother me at all, I’m a man. Perfection arrives with the vanilla and that lustful side with the hazelnuts. It’s versatile, formal, with good sillage and longevity. You can feel the Guerlain stamp; sometimes it brings me distant memories of L’Instant. Worth it.
Habit Rouge L’Eau is like that girl you don’t pay attention to the first time, but one day you see her again and you’re completely smitten. I met the original in 1999 and it was the same: at first I hated the opening, but over time it seemed interesting. Here the opening wasn’t so aggressive, but the first time I found it strange. When I tried it a second time on my skin, the bitter orange pleased me greatly: creamy and fresh, with hazelnuts and a seductive jasmine that takes the lead. In the heart phase, the jasmine rules, with waves of hazelnuts and creamy, sensual vanilla. The jasmine persists at the end with vanilla and a shy but well-integrated patchouli. It’s lighter than the original, but complex and characterful. Sophisticated and subtle, but very masculine. On my skin it lasts about eight hours, with good projection for the first three; then it stays close to the skin, though from time to time it sends out waves of its fragrance.
I didn’t know the classic; I ordered that but they brought me this version. The truth is, I loved it. It opens with oranges and jasmine before becoming creamy thanks to the vanilla and the soft touch of hazelnuts. The longevity was decent and the projection moderate. I deduce that the classic has more power and complexity, but I see this as a more versatile option.
Habit Rouge L’Eau maintains that powdery identity of the original, that ‘magic dust’ Lucas Turin speaks of. Habit Rouge comes from ‘red jacket’, used in equestrian sports. L’Eau is a bomb of talc-jasmine wrapped in not-too-sweet vanilla (perhaps due to the hazelnut) and a very sharp, stinging citrus opening, 70s/80s style. Unlike other men’s perfumes that hide flowers with musks, here the jasmine shines. It’s quite unisex, ideal for spring or summer evenings, elegant and different. It’s not for blind buying; ask for a formal or semi-formal occasion. I imagine someone like Salvador Dalí wearing it.
I’ve gradually fallen in love with this great fragrance.
At first it didn’t convince me, but over time I’ve fallen in love with this fragrance.
Habit Rouge L’Eau was my star find of 2019. I bought it blind, trusting that as a Guerlain, the quality would be impeccable. This 2011 flanker, created by Thierry Wasser, is a springtime take on the classic. It isn’t light as the name suggests; it’s potent and long-lasting, with a naturalness that lets you perceive every note. It’s super versatile, wearable all year round thanks to its great sillage and longevity (over 10 hours), so you won’t go unnoticed even in winter. I fall in love with Guerlain more and more each day for that infinite quality.
