  • It feels like a made-to-measure industrial perfume. Knowing L’instinct was involved, I didn’t expect a tribute to the house’s classics. Besides, since Guerlain loosened its reins and fell into LVMH’s hands, I haven’t held out much hope. Yet, there was hope because the original treatment in the Eau de Parfum version seemed intact. A reinterpretation? Calling it ‘Habit Rouge’ doesn’t turn this herbal infusion with vanilla into Jean-Paul Guerlain’s masterpiece. The opening is rushed, reminiscent of Hermès water and a generic aqua that lasts mere seconds before turning green. Then comes a blast of dry, herbal notes where yerba mate and hemp seem to merge. Rose is the new protagonist in the series, and while it doesn’t shine, it emerges upon drying alongside the trio of leather, patchouli and vanilla, which is the most interesting part. There is an effort to give this flanker some quality, but let’s not think of it as Habit Rouge, not even as Guerlain. The industry has produced a safe product, with a bottle identical to L’Homme Idéal that screams its intentions.

Not a whiff, it smells like an eighties dollhouse: plastic and pink, a total disaster and nothing masculine.
