Descripción

1876 by Histoires de Parfums is a floral fragrance for women. Launched in 2001, this composition was created by perfumer Sylvie Jourdet. The top notes unfold a freshness with lychee, orange, and bergamot; the heart reveals a harmony of rose, caraway, carnation, iris, cinnamon, and violet; while the base notes anchor the essence with guaiac wood, vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, and musk.

  • What a pity this house and its fragrance don’t have more fame, because it’s a beast. In short: a woody oriental, elegant, sexy, and super feminine. The sillage is moderate—you can notice it, but not from two metres away—and the longevity on my skin is satisfactory, around five hours with good projection and perhaps another two hours closer to the skin. I have the 15ml version and would definitely buy it in a larger size; I don’t want to be without it. For those who want to read more: if you’ve seen the description or informed yourself, you’ll know it’s inspired by the dancer and spy Mata Hari, a beauty who was greatly adored by men of her time. She was said to be sensual and elegant, one of those women who radiate confidence and impose presence. I’ve always loved her story, so when I decided to try it, it was the inspiration rather than the notes that drew me in, though the notes also seemed interesting. When I tested it in-store, my first thought was ‘wow, it smells like her’, and then I laughed because obviously I didn’t know her, but for me this fragrance conveyed everything I could imagine: elegant sensuality, exotic, oriental, with a vintage touch. I detect it as spicy, slightly powdery, and woody. Regarding the notes, I don’t detect lychee, clove, or caraway. It says the opening has orange and bergamot, but I detect no citrus; it must be so well blended that it’s unnoticeable. The notes I do detect are rose, but very oriental and dark; I detect the cinnamon spice, but it’s well-integrated, not annoying or strong. I detect the powdery iris and violet, but it’s not that powdery, difficult-to-wear kind like Chanel No. 5; it’s a vintage powder that makes you think of an old era, but one that a young, full-of-life woman like the dancer Mata Hari would wear. All this is reinforced by the wood and sandalwood. When I wear it, my self-esteem goes up to 100 and I feel secure, sexy, and elegant—but not royal elegance, but that of an exotic woman dedicated to dance, which is why I think it’s well inspired. I consider it for nights and going out, not much for summer as it’s very oriental and woody; perhaps on a cool summer evening. Longevity is about five hours with moderate projection, then drops to personal scent and lasts about two more hours. I bought the 15ml version, which will last me quite a while for going out, but I think I’m going to get the large refill because it’s one of those perfumes where you say ‘I want to always have it in my collection’. I don’t recommend blind buying, as it’s not the kind of fragrance that suits everyone or is easy to wear.

I bought this thinking it would be feminine, but the woody and spicy notes are far too heavy; I can’t detect any citrus in the opening. The dry-down sounds distinctly masculine. Performance and sillage are average, nothing special. I’m disappointed and don’t understand why it’s marketed as a women’s fragrance.
