To be honest, Varvatos surprises. This is my second purchase from the designer, and this Dark Rebel Rider is fresh, powerful and hypnotic. It clings to the skin, and you can detect the saffron and incense. For a test spray, it’s a different story.
Lots of leather, the smell is strong. Pity that when it dried down my wife said it reminded her of some dead animal.
Quite a bit of leather, very strong smell. Pity that in the dry-down my wife said it reminds her of some dead animal.
A leather bomb. 8-9 hours of longevity on my skin. It has entered my collection through the front door. To pick a fault, I’d like it to project more.
Today I’ll give myself space to share some impressions of the Nicho/Designer Dark Rebel Rider by John Varvatos. The bottle tells you everything: dressed with a leather jacket. The message is strong and clear: Dark Rebel Rider wants to tell the story of the old-time motorcyclists who still remain. That rough story, where life unfolds on the motorcycle and is surrounded by alcohol and fights. Hit the accelerator with a marked citrus opening, a glorious black and bitter mantle. It’s a bitter and dark citrus, where bitter orange, saffron, and others enact a great beginning. It lasts 1 to 2 hours, then crashes brutally into a dry-down that commemorates that good used leather jacket, part of your lifestyle. It’s the olfactory sensation when you bury your nose in torn and dusty leather. Refined leather, elegant but worn by the history of this Rebel Rider. Additionally, it allows other sensations in the mid-phase: the leather takes on a neutral, waxy (soft but noticeable) aroma from the iris. Finally, this iris slowly impregnates with resinous notes that act as a bridge between the mid-phase and the grand finale. Pleasant intermediate phase with hidden floral notes, impregnated with resins and something smoky from the incense. Reaching the final phase (3 to 4 hours), this cowboy living freedom alongside his faithful jacket gives way to the famous Russian Leather, which now has personality, although cacao, vanilla, and patchouli formulate the aroma into a good bourbon. It’s something strange, but it follows the logic of this motorcyclist’s story. Glorious finale, not sweet or anything like that, on the contrary, it’s a controlled sweetness and something liquorish. A great achievement by Rodrigo Flores and John V at an accessible price. Cheers Perfumado’s.
It has a strong and beautiful note, just like you. Yes, like your eyes… haha. The truth is, I want to write like those who write here. Just kidding, I have the perfume and although I like it, I have to admit it’s not everyone’s taste.
A delightful surprise found in this fragrance. It has a marked presence of leather, which fascinates me, and a liquorish sweetness, not cloying and wearable. I don’t know why I found an air of Aramis Life in it, that discontinued perfume that was part of my collection many years ago.
I bought it recently because when I tried it, I liked it a lot. The opening is potent, sweet, with liquorish notes. What I like most is the smoky note that lingers, very sweet (I suppose from the oliban incense). I can’t quite distinguish the leather that gives this EDT its character. I use it in winter because it’s a heavy fragrance for cold climates. Ideal for the night too. Unfortunately, its projection and longevity are scarce in my evaluation, reducing to almost nothing by the 3-hour mark. Nevertheless, it’s a fairly unique fragrance, so I think it’s worth trying.
The most misunderstood perfume in my collection. The first impression is… pff, what is this? Then it settles and makes way for leather and wood, feeling almost like a glass of liquor. The scent is potent at first, then you grow fond of it, understand its message, and it wraps around you. It leaves a trail of sweet, cosy cocoa, so much that sometimes you sigh after ‘drinking’ that scent. In cold weather, it really stands out. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s something I’d like others to remember me by. Serious, neat, with character and an exclusive touch of mystery for winter. I recommend testing it before buying.

I don’t want to write so much because everyone has defined this super awesome perfume well. But I’ll just say something brief: it would get a 10/10 if they released an EDP version. SIMPLY, A MAN’S AROMA. Rocker, woodsy, leather jackets, cedar, cocoa ashes and vanilla that were incinerated in a blend of saffron. A fragrance gem.

DARK REBEL RIDER JV: When I bought it, I thought: what on earth does this smell like? But upon reapplying, I began to understand it better with each use. It’s a strong, dark, rebellious, bold, and rough mystery. Its name tells you the way: your nose must travel it until you reach a nightclub with action, motorcycles, live rock, and excess. It has that initial rejection, but afterwards it transforms and smells incredible. It’s a gem, a daring and scandalous masterpiece. For cold climates, it’s not for everyone, but I love it. Scent: 9.0. Projection: 2 hours, good enough. Longevity: 6 hours. Recommended.

But after sniffing it several times, I began to understand more and more until I discovered its wonderful aroma: strong, dark, rebellious, bold and rough. Its name gives you the clue, and your nose has to explore it to reach its destination: a city night, nightclubs, action, motorbikes, live rock and excess. Total madness, delicious unisex leather, this is liquid diamond.
Just as I switched to niche perfumes, someone recommended the Varvatos line; although not one of the most enduring, it was certainly different from other designer fragrances… that’s why I bought it in the same order as Club de Nuit and Layton. In summary… of the three, this is the one that brought me to tears… it’s SO DISTINCT from everything else… it smells like a roadside bar literally… as if a motorcyclist had spilled his liquor onto his leather jacket and then got into a fight where the jacket was left forgotten among some pieces of wood. I will definitely buy the entire Varvatos line and perhaps… in the medium term… another Marly perfume.
THE TRUTH IS THIS PERFUME SURPASSED MY EXPECTATIONS. I ORDERED A DECANT TO KNOW IT BETTER AND PFFFF, GENTLEMEN, I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED A SELLER TO ORDER THE FRAGRANCE, WHAT A STEAL!
Another blind buy I made, without regrets… A charming, sweet perfume that my wife adored… It reminds me of Bentley For Men Intense but a bit sweeter and without that marked alcohol note; to my taste, it’s like a blend of Bentley For Men and Esika Pulse… It might be due to the incense, but it gives me the sensation of a tobacco note… As another reviewer indicated, it seems to smell like a motorcycle bar… It’s not for everyone, it’s for rebels.
A blind buy and honestly… I’m utterly fascinated; it has a serious yet sweet scent, perfect for going out at night in winter or autumn, not recommended for summer. If your friend or the girl you want to impress is a bit mysterious, rebellious, and likes adventure, she will love this fragrance, but I recommend keeping it close so she can smell it; if the girl is a bit more ‘feminine’, I doubt she’ll praise your perfume. If you like dressing in black, especially in leather, whether jackets or boots, this will match perfectly, especially if you have a café racer, chopper, or custom motorcycle. Highly recommended at 100% if you prefer serious scents rather than sweet ones; I find it perfect for men aged 25 and above, 20 is borderline, but I wouldn’t recommend it to minors at all.
A gem in danger of extinction… I enjoy it so much that I don’t care how long it lasts or its projection; I ordered three more bottles today in case I can’t find it in the future… my batch code is from May 2016, bought in 2021, so I can’t take any risks… I’d rather enjoy it for 4 or 5 hours, which is what envelops me, than lose that pleasure by worrying about its performance… and I believe its performance might be due to that high quality and naturalness of its ingredients, something not common in so many high-performance perfumes… if I’m wrong, I’d like to know to learn and satisfy my curiosity, as nothing would change the pleasure this endangered gem brings me…
A gem in danger of extinction… I enjoy it so much that today I’ve ordered three more bottles, in case they stop finding it. My batch code is from May 2016, bought in 2021, so I can’t take any risks. I prefer to enjoy it for 4 or 5 hours, which wraps around me, rather than losing that pleasure by being preoccupied with its performance. I think its performance has to do with that high quality and naturalness of ingredients, something not common. If I’m wrong, I’d like to know just to learn, but nothing would change the pleasure this endangered gem gives me.
An exquisite, innovative, and powerful fragrance that makes you more alpha than Wolverine himself. Pity that, like all JV scents, its projection and longevity are very low.
The truth is… it smells remotely similar to Bentley For Men Intense, and comparing the two, I prefer the Bentley. It lacks good longevity and fades quickly to skin scent. Depending on your pH, it can make you smell sweaty with aromatic notes. The bottle looks nicer than the fragrance does; I wasn’t surprised. I respect others’ tastes, but for me… it’s indifferent.
Many compare it to Bentley For Men Intense, but for me, it has a magnificent saffron note that dominates, which is why I prefer it over the Bentley, although as the saying goes, tastes differ.
Smells like a dirty jacket, a motorcycle, and an open road… an absolute gem of modern perfumery, what an intoxicating scent!
I absolutely love leather notes, but this one is for a select few: it smells ‘tough with pedigree’. If you’re a bit of a wimp or get motion-sick easily, steer clear. It’s old-school, hardcore leather, akin to Gucci Guilty Absolute or Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather, nothing like the elegant, shoe-leather vibe of Ombre Leather. It’s closer to Marlon Brando’s leather jacket in The Wild One, much like John Varvatos Dark Rebel. Compared to the cheap hype of iris and rum in Bentley For Men Intense, this is absurd; it resembles the regular Dark Rebel more, which has rum and tobacco but is softer and more versatile. With this DR Rider, I see little resemblance. The issue on my skin is performance: it lasts a maximum of four hours with poor projection, especially compared to other leather fragrances that are absolute bombs and smell like coal gas. The packaging is brilliant: a box featuring a black leather jacket and a bottle with zippers, a collectible treasure that motorcyclists will go wild for. If you’re a serious collector or a leather fan, you need it, although by 2023 it’s hard to find and costs over €70.
