  XX Intense is the child of John Varvatos’s final era. It smells good and is well-made, period. Nothing more, nothing less. The opening blends ginger and citrus with a clean, offensively modern air, reminiscent more of an expensive aftershave than a fragrance with a soul. It lasts just enough to raise an eyebrow. Then comes what truly holds it together: a creamy vanilla with a tropical nuance, almost an undeclared soft coconut, which clings to the skin for hours. It’s pleasant, masculine, and surprisingly addictive at close range. The coffee is there, but more as an idea than a strong note. Soon, it’s covered up by tonka and clean woods. The result is a comfortable, close, and easy-to-wear scent. It works in almost any season except extreme heat, fitting both casual and office settings. It projects little and lasts reasonably, quickly becoming a skin scent. That makes it polite, usable… and somewhat flat. It’s hard to associate it with a specific moment or a powerful memory. It doesn’t bother anyone, doesn’t surprise, doesn’t enchant. If that’s exactly what you’re looking for, go ahead. The curious thing is the dissonance with the bottle, which promises more rock ‘n’ roll than the contents deliver, something already habitual in the house. XX Intense is a masculine perfume, correct and well-balanced, ideal for those who want to smell good without surprises. It’s not memorable, but it doesn’t fail. And in this contemporary John Varvatos, far from eras with recognisable signatures like Flores-Roux, it seems that is precisely the aim.
