After years on the market, I decided to try the old Marine and I absolutely love it. It transports me back to the early 90s when my dad used to wear it. It’s now a staple in my toiletries, a top-tier men’s fragrance.
It’s a bit of a shame because I remember having this back in 2002; it was bitter, metallic, herbal, and sour, with some fern notes, not so much marine, though it was salty. Compared to the new one, it’s not even in the same league. It’s a sad reality: the new version isn’t bad, but it’s not identical to that brutal, unique original I remember. I don’t know anything today that resembles it. What a pity that the vintage era is now seen as sweet and scary. Anyway, since it’s cheap, next time I see it I’ll buy it to compare and use. I didn’t buy it that time out of anger and disappointment at the reformulation, but well, that’s how it is. It’s not the only victim of this.
The scent now has nothing to do with the old one. If anyone is hunting for the classic, the closest thing I’ve managed to get my hands on is Brut Océans.
As people say, the current version doesn’t look like the original from the late 80s and early 90s. When I was a nipper, I loved it; it was one of my first passions. This new one smells even older than the original and lacks that charm. What a pity.
You can find Axe Marine in Ecuador, but it’s a right mess trying to track it down. You only manage to grab it in certain southern cities because they import the stock from Peru or Argentina.
Right here in the UK, the Axe Marine (I think it’s the 2024/2025 version) kicks off with that marine freshness everyone craves, packed with lemon and citron, but after half an hour it turns into an absolute powder bomb I didn’t expect. I swear it reminded me of YSL’s Jazz, which is quite unusual. They really should rename it something like ‘Stardust’, haha.
