I picked it up by chance and was surprised. As a young person, I always saw Rochas as a mid-range brand; their current men’s perfumes please me, but they don’t capture the greatness of the house, until last week I tested a bottle of Monsieur just like the photo. Upon smelling it, I felt something special that opened a window to an unknown world: that of Rochas. There I understood its prestige. It is an extremely refined cologne, with that air of elegance that is no longer seen, like quality clothing that lasted or well-cut suits. It has a green touch, not overly heavy on citrus, only at the beginning, with many flowers and a firm body. The woods give it roundness and weight. It is compact yet soft and ethereal, cheerful and at the same time distinguished. A masterpiece. The classic aroma you imagine for a young man in 1960s Paris with a beige trench coat. I wonder why they discontinued perfumes of this quality like Monsieur, Moustache, Lui or Macassar (which for many is a legendary lost treasure), or for women Byzance, Mistère, Lumiere, etc. It seems they only left a Femme that is unrecognisable… Who knows!
I bought this vintage during my last trip to Barcelona. Well, actually my father gave it to me, which is the best thing ever. We had gone out on a sunny day on the recommendation of a friend. What good friends I have. We were strolling peacefully when a roar shattered our calm in the blink of an eye. A group of louts in tractors had taken to the streets, sowing panic with the sole aim of disrupting people who want to live in peace. Roads blocked, containers overturned, cars wrecked. People unable to get to the hospital or go to work. Suddenly we were in a besieged city where terrorism imposed its law. It took us three days to find a perfumerie open. We arrived at the hotel, locked ourselves in tight, and uncorked the bottle of Monsieur Rochas my dad had given me. I sprayed it ten times to forget the fright. It smells more of fern than cypress. Fleeting citrus and spicy notes, very spiced. As if you’d smashed the lid off a jar of cloves and half of it fell into your soup. Undeclared nutmeg notes so someone might declare their love for you. Vetiver and musk to sort out the mess. At the time I didn’t detect patchouli, though that day my nose was battered by the smoke from the riots. I haven’t opened the bottle since. Nor have I returned to Barcelona.
This was my first great perfume when I turned thirteen. I still have the 50ml bottle with half the contents left; it’s super concentrated and was incredibly strong. The blend smelled of tobacco, although that note isn’t listed in the composition: fine, very fine, the perfume of a gentleman. I remember being a lad and using quite a lot because I adored it, so I went to the Velez Sarsfield market in the neighbourhood of the same name to buy hake. The perfume flooded the air and people asked which one it was, complimenting a child’s scent. It’s a blend of woods, lavender, and I still think of tobacco; today I’d buy it without hesitation, but it’s discontinued. I don’t understand why they remove perfumes that are jewels while people continue to have good taste. If you manage to get hold of it, you won’t regret it and it will surely make your Top Five. Simply a jewel. Greetings from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
Well, after searching for data on the 1967 Rochas Monsieur 220ml EDC edition, it turns out to be a very rare and hard-to-find vintage fragrance. Thanks to my father I have a new one. I want to thank my friend allan27880 for helping me research this treasure. Now the task is to sell it; I have seen prices and I think I will offer it between 200 and 250 dollars. Perhaps I am giving it cheap, but considering that these are among the few left in the world, I believe it is worth it. As a reference, I saw one of 440ml on eBay for 400 dollars. So I think I am not far off. Once again, grateful to my friend Allan27880, I send a cordial greeting to everyone.
While sorting through my late father’s belongings, I found an old trunk. I opened it and came across a brand new Monsieur de Rochas from 1970, in its perfectly preserved original box. The liquid has an amber colour. I know it’s discontinued and I’m not sure if it’s a hidden treasure or perhaps it has no value; what I do know is that this was my father’s fragrance, one he never used. The box, though identical, states it is an Eau de Cologne. I intend to investigate thoroughly to see what I can find, as I’ve searched Amazon and eBay without success. If anyone knows anything, I’d be grateful. Best wishes and thanks.
@ Eunuch: It is the most pathetic review I have read on this forum. You are indeed a terrorist, but of culture.
Digging through my late father’s things, I found an old trunk containing a Monsieur de Rochas from 1970 in its pristine original box. You may like it or not, but one must take off one’s hat before these creations. Without a doubt, it is a great perfume that, from the very first spray, offers a sensation of stability and solidly savoury experience thanks to classic notes geared towards the male gender. A magical marriage between Chypre and woody classes endows this composition with a fullness and body hard to equal. A den of memories or a wonder of a bygone world? Some mysteries are better left unsolved, but the aroma of Monsieur Rochas on my nose is simply divine: citrus accords in the opening, followed by vetiver, cedar and a first-class moss that envelop the floral part, creating intense and elaborate panoramas. The presence of an old-school moss and patchouli transforms Monsieur R into a unique olfactory journey. The performance is medium on my skin, but its beauty and depth are almost supernatural, revealing an harmony created with love decades ago. A fragrance that feeds the fantasies of opening the doors of a world that no longer exists.
This was my favourite perfume between 1982 and 1984, is it still available?

Smells of class and depth, perfect for middle-aged gentlemen for that confident trail that weighs nothing. It is exquisite.
A deep, classy scent, ideal for middle-aged gentlemen for its composed trail without being in the slightest heavy. Exquisite.
