It’s not the first time an absolute gem has jumped out at me while searching for treasures in second-hand shops or local perfumeries, lost in thought. And once again, a smile. Caleche is a characterful, mature fragrance, like a woman who knows exactly what she wants and leans into her natural beauty, undimmed by the years, like a cat basking in the late afternoon sun. It carries the formality of the old school; it’s potent and demanding. In fact, that very demand is what leads some to prematurely label it as outdated. The aldehyde accord typical of its generation doesn’t sound particularly modern amidst today’s fragrances, and its resonant, organ-pipe-like body is worlds apart from the coquettish berry and vanilla waters currently in vogue. An immediate greeting of aldehydes and citrus with woody nuances catches you at first. When the opening yields to the floral heart, the impression is of a fragrance that is secure, deep, and richly nuanced. That is the true charm of classic perfumery. The heart is a blend of notable florals, but what stands out on my skin is a sublime combination of rose, jasmine, and violet. There remains a throbbing woody heart as the citrus fades. Caleche’s base has an earthy touch. The scent becomes more masculine as it dries down, yet floral echoes linger until the very end. The wood is beautifully complemented by well-blended musk and vetiver. Fragrances of this level make you wonder if it’s worth dedicating oneself solely to vintages rather than spending on modern proposals that lack a soul.
