First impression: it is unique, unparalleled, challenging, and entirely outside current styles. You need considerable personality to wear it. In this regard, it shares traits with Dior’s Jules and Weil pour Homme, though I must warn you that they are neither the same nor similar.

Unique, unparalleled, and challenging; it stands entirely apart from current trends and demands significant personality to wear. It shares certain essences with Dior’s Jules and Weil pour Homme, though be warned: they are neither identical nor similar.

I expected more potency, yet it proves interesting and complex at first: resinous and dense. All ingredients flow harmoniously with a refined, quality tone, creating a comforting aroma that will delight nature lovers. Nothing synthetic here; it smells incredibly warm and genuine. Another small gem in perfumery that I discovered thanks to Master Bofifa and which is definitely worth trying.

I was wrong to judge it too quickly. I’ve had it for years and can’t even recall where I got it. I used to find it dull or unremarkable, but after re-sampling it a few months ago, my opinion changed completely. Now I wear it more often than I should. The opening is a sweet-and-sour bergamot, striking, with a rich, sharp needle-like note that lingers. Beneath these bright notes lie herbal accords, particularly lavender. The tone is very masculine yet not rigid. Sandalwood and white flowers round it off, keeping it sparkling, while a fresh chamomile illusion gradually emerges. Tonka bean and vanilla are elegant and subtle; they are not the stars but rather wrap around this melodic, natural, and sunny journey. Everything is refreshed by a beautiful oakmoss. Smalto suits any formal occasion; being designed for such events, it avoids the cliché of a suit perfume without veering into casual territory. It strikes a perfect middle ground, truly masterful. Its trail is discreet, but it is compensated by prodigious longevity. The impression is one of high quality. Smalto deserves to be better known. New note in my journal: ‘do not write off a fragrance until you’ve given it a chance’. Rating: 9/10
