Open opens with a lovely pun: strong lavender with a citrus and tobacco twist. Initially, the lavender is a bit sharp, but soon it settles, letting in the herbs and making the scent sweeter, while that tobacco note remains ever-present. Occasionally, I catch a hint of carnation that appears and disappears before I can quite identify it. The vetiver, damp and earthy, seals this classic, masculine fragrance. Performance is excellent: a festival of lavender and tobacco, with medium-to-high projection for the first two hours and longevity that exceeds ten hours, even clinging to the skin the next day. It’s the 90s version; I haven’t tried the current one.
Open starts with a beautiful play on words: strong lavender with a citrus touch and tobacco. At first, the lavender is a bit sharp, but soon it settles, the herbs come in and the scent becomes sweeter, always with that tobacco present. Sometimes I notice a clove that appears and disappears without me identifying it well. The vetiver, wet and earthy, closes this classic and masculine perfume. Performance is excellent: a festival with lavender and tobacco as the protagonists, medium-to-high projection for the first two hours and longevity that exceeds ten hours, even sticking to the skin the next day. It’s the 90s version; I haven’t tried the current one.
A sober, stylish, and composed masculine fragrance; not for young lads. Sometimes I find it rough and wild, ideal for cold climates. Longevity hovers around eight hours, and the trail ranges from heavy to moderate depending on the application.
Roger & Gallet’s Open has completely won me over. It’s almost identical to my beloved Squash by Dana (from the same era), but much longer-lasting and more potent. The price makes it accessible to try one of the most wonderful fragrances of today. Warning: if you don’t like bold, green, masculine scents or the vintage vibe, steer clear, as you’ll likely run away. It’s not invasive or heavy, but decidedly masculine and herbaceous. The opening is brutal: lavender, citrus, and green notes with an intense smoky tone, almost as if we were at a barbecue. After half an hour, that smoke vanishes and a lovely tobacco and vetiver aroma emerges, reminding me of a path covered in dry leaves in autumn. This phase lasts almost forever, many hours. It’s not a beast like Ted Lapidus PL or Balenciaga; its projection is correct, above average, but its longevity is its best card. If you wear it in the morning, you’ll still feel it on your skin by night. After the initial smoke bomb, the nostalgic, autumnal, and green dry-down tones are something every lover of men’s perfumes must experience. Rating: 9.5.
Ohhh, what a delicious perfume! Of course I remember it; it used to be sold in Chile, my brother wore it, and it was highly sought after. He got tired of looking for it and couldn’t find it; I miss it so much! It’s an exquisite scent, very masculine. The truth is, I wish Roger & Gallet would start selling again here in Chile. I’d certainly gift it to my brother for his birthday, and he’d be more than happy. Why isn’t this brand available anymore? I’ve noticed there are two other scents: Open Black and Open White.
A very rich fragrance, a pity it’s no longer available in Chile. Its scent is unique, masculine and extremely refined. It has extraordinary longevity on the skin and clothes, with a magnificent trail. It’s very exclusive and sensual; I find it versatile, perfect for daytime or afternoon wear. Excellent, very good!
I detected the tobacco note, which is the base and noticeable almost from the first moment, alongside a very strong lavender (too much for my taste). I noticed the lemon citrus touch only briefly, along with the bergamot. The dry-down is more interesting: the heart notes are classic Mediterranean kitchen herbs, and the sage gives a metallic impression that some might dislike, along with the thyme. However, throughout the evolution, the tobacco and lavender remain. The latter fades more after 6 or 8 hours in favour of the vetiver, but it’s still there. It’s one of the fragrances where I’ve felt the tobacco strongest. Conversely, there’s no patchouli. It’s clearly for older men; I wouldn’t recommend it to men under 40 or 45, unless you’re the type to wear Polo Green or Quorum. The dry-down reminded me a bit of Quorum, but the herbs are different. It’s for daytime, multi-seasonal (it has fresh notes for summer and others for winter). Longevity is very long-lasting and the trail is heavy to moderate depending on application. It’s a woody and green fragrance, very aromatic due to the tobacco, lavender and herbs. Excellent price-to-quality ratio.
