  • Sweet beauty! Bourjois, a French company from the late 19th century known for lipsticks and powders, wanted to conquer the US with this fragrance. They bet on an unforgettable marketing campaign: Paris as the centre of love, the name, the cobalt blue bottle, and the scent created by Ernest Beaux. They offered small, affordable formats or large luxury bottles, achieving planetary success. They wanted something different from the Nº5: less opulent, more calm but refined, suitable for the housewife and high society. For me, it is like a sister to the Nº5, focusing on violet, peach, and heliotrope. Without civet or aldehydes, it is calmer but equally sweet and romantic. The violet is powdery, nostalgic, and velvety over a background of amber and sandalwood. Over time, it evolves into a powdery, sweet, amber-vanilla violet. Notes of lime, amber, and ylang-ylang evoke the shared DNA with the Nº5. A masterpiece worth owning. My review is of the 1940s cologne, which is incredibly rich.

  • SOIR DE PARIS was born in 1928 by Ernest Beaux, the genius behind Chanel’s Nº5, and was recreated in 1992. It was one of the first to target the middle class with luxury quality, achieving worldwide success. The current EDP version comes in an elegant cobalt blue bottle with a silver cap. Upon spraying, it smells like those old perfumes my aunts wore in my childhood; it transports me straight back to my youth. It is a harmonious floral-woody scent with a powdery hint; although it doesn’t contain aldehydes, it feels like it does. Iris and violet stand out. Its dry-down is soft and wonderful. It shares the DNA of the Nº5 but is distinct: while the Chanel didn’t hook me, this one has won my heart. It has moderate sillage and lasting longevity. It is feminine for any age, though an elegant man would wear it too. Put on a light, fitted dress, high heels, and an updo; spray without fear and you will be the queen at any cocktail party.

As soon as I took out my dark blue miniature, a scent from another time embraced me: aldehydes and opulent flowers in perfect harmony with spices and an animal touch. It is a deep, bright floral, just like the bottle. I imagine strolling down Parisian streets beneath the Eiffel Tower, savouring mysterious balms and earthy notes weaving a subliminal past. A wonderful territory with such charisma that any vintage lover would desire it.
