  • Venezia Essenza Pour Homme is a fragrance that wins me over from the very first spray, as it stands apart from what conventional perfumery offers. I wouldn’t call it the definition of originality, but it does decisively distance itself from the leather classics so prevalent here in Spain. What I like most is its balance: the leather is always present, yet it isn’t aggressive nor softened with sweet fruits. It’s not a rough leather, nor is it overly complacent; the woody nuances embrace and refine it, creating a sober and enveloping harmony. The opening is intense and slightly confusing: leather, spices, and a camphoraceous touch that at first may seem like nothing more than alcohol, but that sensation disappears quickly. As it develops on the skin, it smells of cared-for leather before becoming elegant and sophisticated. It leaves a warm, spicy, and musky trail, with green and citrus accords that add luminosity. It’s not invasive, but rather contained and refined. I see it as ideal for autumn and spring; it lacks the weight to dominate in winter on the skin. Its dry-down is soft and cosy; although I don’t wear it daily, it wouldn’t feel out of place. In my case, it suits formal wear perfectly. Conceptually, The Merchant of Venice pays homage to Venice and its perfumery legacy. The bottles are works of art: the cap features a wind rose and the bottle evokes Venetian mosaics. My only disappointment is the performance: despite being an Eau de Parfum, its trail and longevity are somewhat weak. What a pity, because olfactorily it comes close to excellence.
