  • I tried the 50ml version on a trip to the south of the country and found the bottle with the wooden cap. I also tried the old 5ml Guerlain edition. Both seemed fabulous: a woody scent close to the skin and myrrh, which is my favourite. Now I see that both have changed presentation; I don’t know if they are the same. At Guerlain I bought a 200ml bottle and now it smells more like cigar smoke with vetiver; it’s still good, but I preferred the old version, not realising they had reformulated it. 🙁 I have managed to buy the bottle with the wooden cap and an earlier one marked W7 3SA on the bottle; its aroma is stronger. Of course, both are superb.

Carven Vetiver: my father’s favourite fragrance (who has passed away). When he used it, about 30 years ago, it was a real attention-grabber, just as aquatic or spicy scents are today. It was a magnet for women back then, even though it dates from 1957. Everyone in the house loved its powerful sillage; in fact, my mother used to put it on us for school when we were little. I vaguely remember the olfactory profile, but it had a fascinating, fresh and weightless aroma with a very pleasant decongesting effect upon application. Citrus and woody notes predominate; it is extremely pleasant from start to finish. If I could travel back in time, I’d bring money and buy three or four 100 ml bottles. That is how good I consider it. Fragrance: 9/10, Longevity: 9/10, Projection: 9/10, Price: 9/10.

  • The version I have is the full green box edition, prior to the one with the wooden cap. At first, I sensed a strong resemblance to Guerlain’s vintage Vetiver: slightly powdery, floral with soft citrus notes. In the mid-stage, the flowers and tuberose root stand out alongside the vetiver. The dry down reminded me of the current Guerlain version, with soft musk and myrrh, oakmoss and cedar. It is a vetiver very close to the Guerlain style (initially like the vintage and drying down like the current one), but softer, with moderate sillage and longevity exceeding twelve hours, settling close to the skin. Ideal for daytime wear and heat.

  • Well, as I mentioned, I work at a fishmonger’s. I applied the Vetiver at 6 am and could still smell a trace by 5 pm. It is incredibly potent! Imagine smelling of sardines all day and, nearly 11 hours later, still detecting bitter wood on the collar of your t-shirt. It makes you feel masculine and virile. Scent 8/10, Longevity 10/10, Sillage 7/10, Price 10/10.

  • I managed to get this fragrance by blind-buying it, as I was imagining a different scent. It doesn’t smell bad; I just thought it would be fresher. However, that bitter touch really stands out. I don’t think Raimond and everyone else would wear it, so it suits me well, although I expected more freshness; for that, I’d rather go with Paco Rabanne, Azzaro or Swiss Army from my various options. That said, it’s not for a young crowd.

A classy classic with a perfectly balanced bitterness and an earthy touch that works well. The projection and longevity are consistent. The citrus opening is fresh and energising, ideal for this time of year. It smells excellent and conveys a sense of high quality. The sage, cedar and sandalwood do a great job without overshadowing the vetiver, which comes across as green, delicate and almost powdery. While similar scents can be found in other brands, Carven is truly at the top. If you enjoy these aromas, this is a valid option to feel both elegant and modern.
