I want to have it again. I’ve been looking for something similar for years and didn’t feel anything like it until I found it. Now I have eight bottles just in case, haha.

I want to have it again. I have been searching for years and felt nothing like it until now. I have finally found it! Just in case, I already have eight bottles jj

  • What About Adam by Joop is an obscure and very rare exponent from the 90s, from a house that is always intense and colourful. It’s no exception: its opening is a party rocket with citrus mint and a green vegetable note like tomato leaf (like celery without the bite) that envelops everything. Beautiful at first, but that vegetal and mentholated brightness fades quickly to reveal its true face: a jovial aroma with mentholated citrus, synthetic greens, and a centre like rubber or gum that gives it robustness. The longevity is fantastic, up to 8 hours, with medium-low projection but always present. It represents the brand’s risky approach and remains current. An excellent proposal that generates love or hate for that uncommon vegetable, and that’s why I appreciate it so much.

  • As Christian1975 says, there is nothing like it. What a pity it is discontinued or only available at niche prices, hovering around €200 as Wolfgang Joop suggests with the name. What happened to Adam? He sought to capture the scent of paradise, and let me tell you, he has more than succeeded. It is a bomb of citrus and green notes; I usually hate citrus perfumes, but here the notes are stronger, making it more long-lasting and potent. With a slightly higher concentration, it could even be an Eau de Parfum. It is a gem that everyone hopes will return or be improved, although that would be very difficult 🙂

He wanted to capture the scent of paradise, and believe me, he’s succeeded. It’s a bomb of citrus and green; I hate citrus in general, but here the notes are stronger, making it more long-lasting and potent. With just a touch more it could be an Eau de Parfum. It’s a jewel we hope will return or improve, though that’s difficult.

I wore it two decades ago and only used it once, but it stayed with me for ten years. I applied it moderately and the trail was brutal. That citrus-sweet combination was unique and I loved it; it’s one of the few male scents I truly adored. It hurts that good perfumes disappear or are reformulated, but I’d a thousand times rather remember a beautiful one and tell my past self: ‘I enjoyed it’. It’s better they die with honour than to live with shameful changes.

  • I’m going to review one of my all-time favourites: What About Adam by Joop (1992). The emotion gives me palpitations. This beauty, created by the solvent nose of Calice Becker, was ahead of its time as we moved from the opulence of the 80s to a relaxed austerity. The macho Kouros gave way to a man hinting at a new world. This is how I conceive Adam: an aromatic woody scent with the most unforgettable and impactful dry-down, featuring mint, cassis, grapefruit, and tomato leaf (incredible). Minutes later it unfolds sandalwood, lavender, cedar, and geranium, and like in a Hitchcock film, a dry vanilla with oakmoss and vetiver bursts in almost at the end, closing this masterpiece. I miss it, I long for it, I need it more than most in my collection. Unexplainable decisions that many won’t understand. Years later (1996) its female counterpart, All about Eve, came out, which passed without glory (unlike the brilliant film). An oriental with apples and cinnamon. Adam, I hope we meet again.

  • I bought it almost by chance when I spotted it in a perfumery here in the early 2000s. Upon trying it, it was a revelation. The tomato touch and acidity reminded me of a Nina Ricci perfume, Les Belles de Ricci, which my aunt Nora, my fashion and perfume role model, owned. Everything was wonderful, what lovely memories

The tomato and acidity reminded me of a Nina Ricci perfume, Les Belles de Ricci, which my aunt Nora owned; she was my reference for perfumes and fashion. Everything wonderful, what lovely memories.

  • And Eden blooms with this fragrance. Few perfumes nowadays convey that sensation. It is simply BEAUTIFUL!

  • In the 90s there was a plague of flat lime-scented perfumes, and this Joop is no exception, though it does it in grand style. The formula remains effective and almost addictive for sunny days.

What About Adam by Joop. I go against the grain: I did not like the fragrance straight away. Upon buying and applying it, I had an immediate aversion. I found it bitter, synthetic, as if smelling a damp environment. I respect that everyone has liked it, but it was one of the purchases I regretted the most. I did not connect with it, although it was a magnet for compliments when I wore it. Of all the perfumes I owned, it was the only one where I experienced that, despite detesting it, I saw everyone else liked it. Olfactory memory is a mystery for each of us. After reading the avalanche of favourable reviews, I am considering giving it another chance. Perhaps, after 25 years, either the perfume or I have changed. But I do not see it as very likely to get hold of it again. Rating: 2/10

I’ll go against the grain: What About Adam by Joop simply didn’t work for me. Upon first spray, I had an immediate aversion; it felt bitter and synthetic, like a damp room.
