  • It was my first perfume in my teens, and if I’m lucky enough to find it again, people say, ‘mate, you smell like Luis’ – they recognise me by that scent. It’s an oldie from 1992 and smells absolutely divine; you’ll be noticed, it leaves a trail, and has good longevity. However, it has a flaw: if worn during the day and you sweat, it smells awful, which is why it’s called ‘Noche Vuelo’ – perfect for going out. I’m surprised no one has reviewed it properly; it smells exquisite. Being vintage, it does feel a bit synthetic or heavy on the alcohol, but it’s a real gem – I’ll have to buy it online.

Nightflight by Joop (pronounced Yop, it’s German) brings together several qualities and defects. The cap and atomiser smell fresh, clear, clean, and sensual. However, as soon as it’s applied, it feels synthetic and somewhat dirty, which ruins the fragrance to some extent. As soon as it takes flight, the Nightflight is crushed. The freshness remains but in the background (which is why many think it’s for day and summer); it seems the flight is reduced by that synthetic and dirty turbulence that contaminates the fragrance. More than a night flight, it seems like a daytime terrestrial drag. Later, the mentholated freshness, the sweetness of the pineapple base, the tonka bean, the sandalwood, and the musk give a sexy identity (in my taste, slightly sensual) and nocturnal. I don’t feel the almond. The flowers feel faint, diffuse, and convoluted. I don’t see it as oriental as the blurb says. Some see it as masculine and others as unisex. On YouTube, there’s a woman using it and it’s one of her favourites. Scent: 5.5/10, Trail: 6/10, Longevity: 6/10, Versatility: 7/10.

I had the chance to own it. For me, it is purely nocturnal, not versatile; you have to find the right point in the middle notes. The opening is somewhat artificial in the citrus, and the base is slow but constant, subject to changes. It has good trail and longevity (you have to take it with patience) and I think it has its own world that can please or not. It shares some notes with the original Joop Homme but has nothing to do with it. Joop Homme is more versatile, sweet, and fits better with the oriental family without giving up on woods or florals. NightFlight is very atypical and for its time slot (neither before nor after), its middle notes emit unexpected sparks that greatly beautify the fragrance. This review is of the original; I don’t know if it was reformulated or discontinued, because its predecessor Joop Homme also stopped making those sudden changes in its reformulation, eliminating nutty notes that made it bitter. When I chose, I went for Joop Homme, and this one remains in my wardrobe to this day.

After a few hours, on my skin, it is basically musky, a musk that reminds me a bit of Bal à Versailles.

Pineapple, citrus and lavender. That’s pretty much all there is. Although they list many notes, my nose doesn’t detect them well. As it dries, perhaps it becomes slightly more musky. The scent is very synthetic; the opening makes me sneeze and I have to hold my breath. Apart from that, it’s not entirely bad; the dry-down is pleasant, albeit synthetic. Longevity is good, but the projection is just adequate. Ideal for hot weather and quite masculine. It has that old-school 90s vibe. I haven’t tried the vintage version, but I’m sure it was better. For the price it costs, you can’t ask for much more.

Pineapple, citrus, and lavender. Not much more is here. Although the list has many notes, I don’t detect them much. In the dry-down, perhaps slightly more musky. The smell is very synthetic; the opening makes me sneeze and I have to hold my breath. But aside from that, it’s not entirely bad; the dry-down is pleasant, though always synthetic. Longevity is good, although the projection seems fair. Perfume for hot weather, very masculine. It has that old-school 90s touch. I didn’t try the vintage, but it was surely better. For the price it costs, you can’t ask for more.

  • I’ve used it for years; I always saw it as a freshie from the early 90s, but not aquatic like Cool Water. The lack of an aquatic nuance is accentuated by elegant lavender, sandalwood, and bergamot. And it has that special point: the pineapple. A sweet, friendly pineapple, like a Sugus caramel. It suits summer very well, refreshing but having that ‘something more’ with character for special occasions. The structure is complete, wearable day and night. Projection and longevity are correct. A charming and honest aroma. Personally, I like it more than Aventus.

There’s no confusion possible; upon application, you’re back to the late 80s and early 90s. Classic fresh scents with lavender, citrus, herbs, and sandalwood. I doubt a young person today would appreciate it; the fashion is for sweet, citrusy aromas like Invictus. This opens similarly to Polo Sport, too much so, but in the dry-down, that almond note appears, making it unique. That’s the best phase: it shifts to a pleasant balsamic scent with soft woods. The pineapple is only noticeable at the start, and the citrus flies off quickly. The final phase is excellent. If you’re over 30 and tired of searching for fresh scents that last, this is a good option. Scent 8, Longevity 8 (8 hours), Projection 7 (very good), Price 10.

There’s no doubt: applying it transports you back to the late 80s and early 90s. These are fresh classics starting with lavender and citrus, with herbs and sandalwood at the base. I doubt a young person today would appreciate it, as current trends favour sweet, citrusy scents like Invictus. This Nightflight opens similarly to Polo Sport, too much so, but as it dries, that distinct almond note emerges, making it unique and the best phase: it shifts to a pleasant balsamic touch with soft woods. The pineapple is only noticeable at the start, and the citrus flies off quickly. The dry-down is brilliant; if you’re over 30 and tired of fleeting fresh fragrances, this is a great option. Scent rating 8, longevity 8 hours, projection 7, price 10.

I don’t know how to categorise this divine fragrance, unique in its class despite the economical price. It breaks with Joop’s tradition without belittling their other offerings. Nightflight doesn’t stay critical; it goes further. I don’t know if it’s Virginia juniper or Brazilian rosewood, but it gives a magical touch that makes you feel vibrant and secure. I recommend it to those who like the different and the special, outside the monotony. It envelops you, provoking security and freedom.

  • This NIGHT FLIGHT is difficult to grasp, especially for a JOOP. At first, it seemed unpleasant, hurtful, and grating. Excessively artificial, with premeditated nocturnity and an abuse of authority. Like cheap hair lacquer where you don’t know if it’s setting or frizzing the hair. I didn’t form an opinion immediately because I learned you have to give things a chance. It repelled me at the start like Chanel No. 5 did when I was young, but now I tolerate it a bit more. It remains synthetic and artificial, though that need not be bad; most Joop men’s scents are. Nightflight handles a difficult-to-assimilate accord; I don’t detect the listed notes. It is very musky, with those incisive white musks that make you feel sick. The oriental family listed is false; it’s aromatic, musky, and aldehydic. The aldehydes are pungent, acidic, and volatile, intensifying that sickly-sweet citrus musk. I acknowledge it has more notes than just musk, but I can’t describe them. It surely carries synthetic citrus and herbal notes. I might detect citronellal, geraniol, melonal, and benzaldehyde, but I detect nothing natural. Performance is excellent, personality is strong, usable without over-applying, but mandatory to test first.

  • Nightflight by Joop! seems to be the most sought-after right now, with limited stock and prices ranging from €30-35 up to €100. As a collector who buys everything, I must say that given the ‘night’ in the name, I expected more; instead, they emphasise the ‘flight’, making it a serious, elegant scent for those over 30, reminding me of Heir by Paris Hilton, though this one has a sweeter dry-down after a few hours. I liked it, but it’s best for special occasions. I was surprised to find it features pineapple, which is quite noticeable; to me, it smells of lemon, rose, and plenty of alcohol, drying down to a dry, masculine finish thanks to the musk. They could have added vanilla or sugar like in Heir, according to my taste. Still, it’s excellent for guys over 30. I can’t say anything bad about this designer.

  • Nightflight by Joop! is now in huge demand; the price has skyrocketed from €35 to €100, and stock is low. I buy everything that comes out, but given the name ‘Night’, I expected more; here, the emphasis is on ‘Flight’, something serious and elegant for men over 30, similar to Heir by Paris Hilton, although Heir becomes sweeter later. I liked it, but for special occasions. I was surprised it contained pineapple and was so noticeable; to me, it smells of lemon, rose, and lots of alcohol, drying down to a masculine scent thanks to the musk. They could have added vanilla or cocoa like in Heir. It’s fine for guys over 30; I can’t say anything bad about the designer.

I picked this up in 2006 at full price, $25, and as always, once I bought it, I finished it. It came off very synthetic, with citrus, pineapple, and that metallic touch like Eternity, I believe lavender. The dry-down was sweet but odd, hard to explain. At the time, it was unique compared to Blue Label, Polo Blue, or Terre d’Hermès. Nowadays, with so much choice, I’ve lost interest; it’s only for crazy collectors.
