Gucci Guilty Absolute: €55 for 50ml (and you’ll have some left over) or €70 for 90ml. It’s a realistic leather scent, bolstered by cypress, vetiver and dark woods. The creator is Alberto Morillas. It’s no longer in the commercial line, but you can still pick it up easily on sites like Notino, now available in Gucci’s private collection. It’s not very versatile, but it’s a legend: if you’re a fan of serious leather, you must own it. Beware of novices or those who get easily overwhelmed; with this, you’ll be radiating a potent, dark leather scent for a good while. It’s nocturnal and fresh, nothing for dates, youthful flirting or for having people ask you in class or at work. Mature? From your mother, mate. In a gay disco where sadomasochistic leather hardcore is the theme, you’d be king smelling like this… and you’d definitely get picked up. Dark Lord by By Kilian, from €200 to €260 for 50ml (price varies by store). Also by Morillas. Taking the masculine leather scent of GGA, he adds two peppery notes at the start, a buzzie touch of rum, a subtle sambac jasmine and davana in the heart to give it personality. Quality: it’s there and noticeable. Longevity: same as GGA, a huge leather scent lasting 9-10 hours with a strong trail for 3 hours. Versatility: low. Price: exaggerated. By Kilian is expensive and exclusive, made by Estée Lauder, not available everywhere and hard to try before buying if you don’t live in a major city. Would I recommend buying it? NO, definitely not. There are cheaper leathers like GGA with similar scents and equal or better performance. As an olfactory experience… addictive: if you’re a niche reviewer, collector, wealthy veteran, obsessed leather and darkness fan, or want to show off to perfume-obsessed colleagues, or from the gothic-black metal scene… or to show off in forums, splendid. For the rest, forget it. PS: if you can, go to a niche perfumery to smell it or ask for a decant and try it on your skin. Buying blind… absolutely not.
