Schwarzlose is a new house starting on the right foot. The 1A-33, despite the coldness of its name which sounds like a fighter-bomber, is a warm floral with a slight spicy touch. It has a very well-defined dry-down in stages, like the acts of a play. It opens with a breeze of linden blossom with mandarin and a hint of pepper; in the second act, jasmine takes centre stage, and at the end, iris remains with the last trace of pepper. Everything is very well rounded, has body, and is perfectly unisex; if it were lighter, removing the pepper, the conception would change radically. Its elegance and refinement stand out; it reminds me of Marlene Dietrich: they said it was like a caress followed by a whip-crack, and that’s how I perceive it; the caress of the linden followed by the hit of pepper. The longevity is frankly good; whenever it seems it’s about to fade, it reappears with renewed energy and a little metamorphosed, and I also consider its trail to be high. In summary, it’s a well-crafted fragrance, ‘German technology’ in terms of quality, efficacy, and functionality; we’ll leave the innovative style and designs to the Italians.
J.F. Schwarzlose’s 1A-33 has positively surprised me. After several hours, a soft floral scent remains on my wrist. It’s modern, fresh, citrusy, and floral; intense yet unobtrusive. It has a certain glamour and an immediate burst of freshness thanks to an outstanding mandarin note: juicy, fruity, and sweet, smelling extremely authentic, nothing synthetic, and still dominant. It’s well supported by an undeclared note I detect very clearly: neroli, which adds a pleasant freshness, like an iced juice on a hot summer day. With fragrances like this, you expect just that: a skillfully processed juice to express on the skin everything those fruits express in the air or on the palate. The more I smell it, the more fascinated and amazed I am by how bright, clear, and modern it is; its citrus-floral image makes me think of my grandparents’ era, clearly propagating tradition and modernity. As it dries down, the cedar, very discreet and with a soft hold, provides reliable support, delicately backed by jasmine, magnolia, and an iris note that acts as a very lightly powdery counterweight. It offers an olfactory pleasure to start beautiful days; if you spray it on your skin, soon a ray of sunshine will shine. Medium-level longevity on my skin.
German technology, a modern ‘neo-colony’ that is floral and citrusy yet not sharp; rather, it’s creamy, juicy, and occasionally fruity. The pepper gives it a dry touch and cuts through the mandarin’s sweetness. It feels like a stroll through a Berlin (or why not Bologna?) park in June with the linden trees in bloom. I’ve had it in my shopping basket for four years, and its moment finally arrived a couple of weeks ago. Excellent performance for its style and a unique refinement. I love it.
