Across the Ocean by Gravel is an oriental woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2019, this composition is signed by perfumer Michael Knudson. From the very first moment, it smells of something I already knew. I quickly realised it is like the Erba Pura by Xerjoff in its dry-down phase. My nose skips the fruity notes and goes straight to a powerful musky base with vanilla. It performs well, with a notable trail for the first two hours and moderate afterwards, lasting 9-10 hours on my skin. It is slightly less than the Xerjoff but at almost half the price. Scent 8.5/10, Longevity 9.5/10, Sillage 7.5/10, Value for money 8/10, Packaging 9/10. Would I buy it again? I have not bought it.
It is a rose and oud combination. At first, it comes out slightly citrusy and spicy with a woody touch, but within minutes, a fresh, very prominent rose takes over and lasts throughout the fragrance. During its development, it is accompanied by woods (if there is oud, it is a very gentle oud) and becomes slightly sweeter with tonka bean, finishing with a subtle vanilla note. It is a very good fragrance for daytime, spring and autumn, elegant, with a sillage of about a metre for nearly two hours. It lasted well for 7 hours on me. I do not know where they got the idea for ‘Across the Ocean’; it is a subtle and elegant rose-oud combo. Totally unisex.

It is a truly unisex perfume. At first, it is very woody, but after 20 minutes, the vanilla becomes noticeable and balances everything. It has a spicy and peppery note that I love. It is the first woody perfume I have bought as I usually look for sweeter ones, but I wanted to have a woody scent in my collection. It is quite soft and pleasant, never overpowering. It reminds me a bit of Armani Code for men, but I feel it is sweeter and more subtle. It also has much less projection.
