Descripción
Apparition Homme by Emanuel Ungaro is an aromatic woody fragrance for men. Launched in 2005, this composition was created by perfumer Olivier Polge. Upon release, the fragrance unfolds with mandarin, rhubarb, and anise; the heart reveals tea and pepper; while the base settles on vetiver root and licorice.

First, I’m surprised this is the first review; perhaps it’s not well-known and I haven’t seen it here. The batch code says 2005. The opening is metallic with a very artificial pepper that makes it incisive. On fabric, the rhubarb stands out, but not naturally—rather caramelised and fresher. On my skin, the citrus (mandarin) reacts poorly, smelling a bit ‘rotten’, although it lasted only five minutes; there, the sweet tea dominates, subtle and pleasant, with the scent clinging close to the skin. It reminds me of Natura’s Biography due to that metallic touch, but with better harmony. It’s very original, ideal for trying something new. On my skin, the trail is low and I have to smell almost right up against it, but on fabric it works better.
I bought APPARITION HOMME DE EMANUEL UNGARO for a good deal, as it is discontinued and because the name Ungaro gives me chills of legend, like fallen houses that were once the height of fashion: Pierre Cardin, Guy Laroche, Christian Lacroix, or Lanvin. Also because I like L’HOMME III and especially Oud. But Apparition has disappointed me. It smells like a generic supermarket cologne, something indefinable but very artificial and of poor quality. It is a blend of musky, plasticky citruses, with that rancid aura of cheapness. I am not speaking of the price, but of the pejorative concept of cheapness. The fact that Olivier Polge, creator of Florabotanica, Valentino Uomo, or Midnight in Paris, made it shocks me. Of course, Olivier has to eat and has created perfumes I do not like (La Vie Est Belle) that have triumphed (Invictus, Gabrielle). Buñuel also directed trashy films like Don Quintín el Amargao, but later created masterpieces like Viridiana. Our creators are not always free to let their imagination run wild; if they work for multinationals, they do what they are told. Apparition has no trail and no longevity and could be used as an air freshener for unwanted guests.
I bought APPARITION HOMME DE EMANUEL UNGARO on offer because it’s discontinued and because the name UNGARO still gives me legendary chills, just like other fallen houses that were once the height of fashion: PIERRE CARDIN, GUY LAROCHE, CHRISTIAN LACROIX, or LANVIN, to name a few. Also because I quite like EMANUEL UNGARO L’HOMME III and, above all, EMANUEL UNGARO L’HOMME III OUD. But APPARITION HOMME has disappointed me. It seems like a generic supermarket cologne that smells of something indefinable but very artificial and poor quality. The scent is a mix of plasticised musky citrus, with that rancid aura of cheap goods. I’m not talking about the price (there are excellent cheap colognes) but the pejorative concept of ‘cheap goods’ and everything that entails. The fact that Olivier Polge made it, the author of FLORABOTANICA, VALENTINO UOMO, or MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, seems quite shocking to me. Now, if we think Olivier Polge has to eat and has made perfumes I don’t like much (like LA VIE EST BELLE) but that were huge successes (like INVICTUS, GABRIELLE, or the aforementioned), then it can be understood. Even Buñuel had to direct mediocre films (Don Quintín el Amargao), which doesn’t stop him from directing masterpieces like Viridiana when given the chance. Our beloved creators can’t always let their fantasies run wild, and if they work for fast-consumption multinationals, they have to do what they’re asked. APPARITION HOMME has no trail, no longevity, and could just as well be used as an air freshener for annoying visitors.
I tried it in 2010 at age 22 and found it fresh and well-made; my friends were envious; the name Ungaro already sounded good. It’s a fine fragrance, although it won’t be eternal, and it hurts that Polge, one of the great perfumers, didn’t turn it into a masterpiece. It leaves a huge hole in my heart; I don’t know what went wrong. I would get it again: I remember that immense freshness and those sudden sweet sparks that would appear. I want it back; the bottle was lovely and the perfume inside was something special.
I wore it in 2010 at age 22 and found it fresh and well-made; I missed it dearly, and the Ungaro name alone was a plus. It’s a good fragrance but won’t be eternal, and I’ll miss it because Polge is a great perfumer; my heart flips when I think about it. What went wrong so it wasn’t a masterpiece? I would have it again; I remember that immeasurable freshness with those sweet sparks that from time to time reminded you they were there, making their appearance. I’d love to have it again; the bottle was gorgeous and inside was a great perfume.
Emanuel Ungaro places his Eastern philosophy into an exotic, twisted aquatic scent. It is a fragrance of love and hate, but I remain with the love. It is so far from the known that it stands for more than just its aroma; it is brutally indefinable. Be warned, it is intense, brilliantly ill-made (perhaps on purpose), seductive through that synthetic, psychotropic, and strong personality. Heat creates a dry aura of sugars, metals, and psychedelic turquoises, like electronic party drinks. With this, people hate you and love you, and the hatred is more interesting because it is almost always due to not understanding such a beautiful yet annoying scent, which is a good thing! Apparition is an experience to which one must yield to access its magical aura. Ozone notes, annoying if you push the trigger too far. Otherwise, excellent.
Here, Emanuel Ungaro puts his Eastern philosophy into an exotic, twisted aquatic. It’s a fragrance of love-hate, but I’m sticking with the love. It’s so far from the familiar that it’s worth more than just its scent; it’s brutally indefinable. Be warned: it’s intense, brilliantly botched (on purpose?), seductive for that synthetic, psychotropic, strong personality. Heat creates a dry aura of sugars, metals, and psychedelic turquoises, like those electronic party drinks. With this, people hate you and love you, and the hate is more interesting because it’s almost always due to not understanding such a beautiful, annoying scent (how good!). Apparition is an experience you have to surrender to in order to access its magical aura. The ozonic notes are annoying if you overdo it, but otherwise, it’s excellent.
