Before checking the ingredients I thought: ‘this smells like pepper, I suppose some similar spice’, and I also managed to perceive the watermelon… and I was right. That spicy scent was the cardamom and the watermelon is there too. It may not be a pleasant aroma, but it is not unbearable. It is more recommended in cold climates and less hot seasons, because such an aroma does not develop well in the heat; it can even smell worse if used on rainy and cold days. Important to apply in moderation. In summary, I would give it a 6: barely passes, but it is definitely not the most pleasant aroma.

Before looking at the ingredients I thought: ‘this smells like pepper some spice and also watermelon’… and I was right it was cardamom and yes it has watermelon. Perhaps it’s not a pleasant aroma but it’s not unbearable. Better to use it in cold or less hot seasons because in heat it doesn’t develop well and can smell worse even if it rains and is cold. Important to apply moderately. In summary I give it a 6 barely passes but definitely it’s not the most pleasant scent.

I imagine it is a version of Carolina Herrera’s Chic for Men, as they share many notes and coincide in that the scents most noticeable are cardamom and watermelon.

There is an information error here: Axe Black is presented as a single fragrance, but it is a line with three perfumes (Alive, Myth, and Hysteria). The bottle above is Alive. The notes are from Alive: it is good considering quality/price. First few minutes: strong watermelon, cardamom, and pear; it can be dizzying if you are in a closed space. After that phase comes the best: patchouli, musk, cedar, and delicious pear. There is a moment that reminds me of Abercrombie’s Fierce but less intense. Good duration (7-9 hours), moderate trail (at least 1 metre). It is fine for daily use, preferably in cold weather (autumn/winter); during the day it becomes heavy, so it is a good option for the evening. Good fragrance at a good price ($9), only limited presentation of 50ml, pity.

Watch out for the details: Axe Black isn’t a single scent but a range including Alive Myth and Hysteria. The bottle here is Alive with photos from the campaign. Notes: watermelon cardamom and pear at the start (it can give you a headache if you stay in the room) then patchouli musk and cedar explode with a delicious pear touch. At some point it smells like Abercrombie Fierce but softer. Lasts 7-9 hours with moderate sillage (1m). Ideal for cold or autumn/winter; it gets heavy by day better for night. Good value at $9 but only comes in a limited 50ml what a pity.

  • I use the spray and it mixes brilliantly with fragrances containing vetiver and oakmoss. Ideal for the evening.

  • I use the deodorant and it combines very well with fragrances that have vetiver and oakmoss. Ideal for the evening.

  • A correct perfume that changes greatly depending on whether you smell it in the bottle or on skin. I had it unused for a long time because it smelled rancid and strong straight from the cap; on skin it is pleasant and the watermelon is particularly noticeable. Ideal for climates not exceeding 20°C. I use it when working outdoors or going out quickly to smell good. A bit youthful due to the watermelon, which is well executed. On skin it lasts 5-7 hours; the projection is not very good, but for the price I spray 10 times all over my body. In cold climates it is not annoying: at first it is intense but becomes very soft.

  • Smells good on skin changes a lot if smelled in the bottle. I left it still because it smells stale and strong when opened but on skin it’s pleasant and highlights the watermelon. Ideal for no more than 20°C; I use it working outdoors or for a quick outing to smell good. A bit youthful due to the watermelon which is well done. On skin it lasts 5-7 hours; projection isn’t the best but for the price I’ll spray 10 times all over my body. In cold weather it doesn’t bother: intense at first but then becomes very soft.

  • One of the few Axe fragrances I tolerate (along with Marine), I have the body spray, not the EDT. I don’t distinguish the notes well, but I feel something citrus and fruity (I do perceive the watermelon) and slightly spicy (more noticeable over time). It reminds me of several fragrances but does not imitate any specific one; it does not clash if used with fresh or fruity perfumes. It is not very potent, so it does not overpower the perfume you are wearing. Edit (26/03/2023): I got the EDT and, despite its ridiculous price, I was surprised. The scent is the same as the deodorant but with acceptable performance; it is not far from what some designer brands sell (who seem to take us for fools). It smells quite like the classic Acqua di Gio, but simpler, with a watermelon note that stands out and is pleasant. It also reminded me of several CK Summer scents. With the shower gel and body spray, it outperforms the previous ones in performance while costing less than half. Recommended purchase if you like these scents and want to invest the minimum. Best regards.

  • One of the few Axe scents I can stand (alongside Marine); this is the body spray not the EDT. I don’t know the exact notes but it smells citrusy and fruity (the watermelon is noticeable) with a slight spice that emerges over time. It doesn’t imitate anyone smells natural and doesn’t compete with other fresh or fruity fragrances. It’s not powerful it doesn’t overpower what you’re wearing. Edit 26/03/23: I got the EDT and I’m surprised; it smells the same as the spray but performs for real like designer fragrances that sell smoke. It reminds me of the classic Acqua di Gio but simpler with standout watermelon that smells good also reminiscent of several CK Summer scents. With the gel and spray it beats the previous ones costing half the price. Recommended purchase if you want to spend minimum and like this style.

I have the body spray. Opening of pear, with a marked cedar base. It has aromatic notes, like sage. For some reason, it reminds me of Carlo Corinto Classic (raspberry, leather, woods, 80s herbs). I don’t perceive watermelon, only a fresh pear that darkens the wood and the aromatic tone. Perhaps cardamom, though don’t expect me to be believed. Good for intermediate or cold seasons. I also recommend Black Night: it is like a Versace Eros but more gourmand and masculine, with robust woods and citrus. Blessings.

  • Clarification: I smelled the ‘Remixed’ version by BZRP. My review is for that Axe, not the classic Black (they are similar, only that this one has a twist on the dry down). It is an attempt at an Ultramale in a body spray, something toned down. I didn’t smell watermelon; over time it becomes musky. The opening is pure bergamot and pear; as it dries, cedar appears, and then it disappears. Not bad for the price. As a deodorant, it saves the day. I prefer the white bottle (antiperspirant): it perfumes less but lasts longer and is suitable for everything. 65/100.

  • Clarification: I smelled the ‘Remixed’ version of BZRP not the classic Black (they’re similar just this one has a twist in the dry down). It’s an attempt at Ultramale in body spray a bit lower in tone. I didn’t sense watermelon; over time it’s musky; the opening is pure bergamot with pear then cedar emerges and fades in a couple of hours. Not bad for the price works just as a deodorant. I prefer the white container (the antiperspirant) of the classic Black: it scents less but lasts longer and serves for everything. Rating 65/100.

I tried the original and the BZRP version. The BZRP smells exactly like the original, but its projection lasts very little. In contrast, this Black is very fresh; who said it was intense? Here you can smell the combination of watermelon and pear with cardamom and patchouli.

  • I would never have given this deodorant the name BLACK; it smells more ‘Marine’ than what Axe currently sells under that name. However, beyond being marine, it is totally fruity and luminous, like a summer smoothie. As for the cedar? Well, thanks… it reminded me of Banderas’ King of Seduction, though no one has noticed. I can picture it on a teenager or pubescent boy, but it seems odd for anyone over 20. It is unisex: it has a masculine side, but a girl could wear it without it sounding strange.
