Another vintage-style fragrance, green and bitter, with subtle woods that bring well-being and relaxation. A quality, charming retro aroma with good performance. Oakmoss is present; thanks to this, I better understand the difference in depth between the past and the present. These are scents that recall childhood, when elders left you in the ritual of shaving with generous doses of such fragrances. I like the blend, and in the dry down it becomes sweeter, warmer, and smoky. Exploring vintage perfumes is interesting due to their quality and ingredients. Not everyone shares the same tastes, but reducing them to ‘barbershop’ or ‘old’ is reductive. They possess first-class complexity and development that is worth knowing if you can find them at a good price.

  • Dunhill’s Blend 30 is a fascinating walk through the English countryside on a sunny day, chasing Alice’s cat with a bowler hat and pocket watch. It unfolds that soapy scent typical of the British Lakelands, used for centuries to perfume tobacco and snuff, and to stimulate the imagination of dreamers. It is a Victorian, complex, and artisanal fragrance, bright, herbal, and bitter, unfolding a botanical catalogue where flowers add nuance and lavender brings freshness. One could say it is an aromatic fern, a ‘barbershop’ perfume, but without tonka or vanilla as the style guide dictates. It is balsamic, intensely green: freshly watered grass, a tennis court, a mansion garden. This green sensation I have only felt in ‘Versace Green Jeans’, a lost creation. It evolves towards the soapy, resembling, for instance, Rive Gauche pour Homme. There were years when Dunhill was synonymous with elegance and good taste; Blend 30 belongs to that golden age. Discreet projection and excellent longevity. As I have read, its disappearance was a disaster for perfumery. Thank you, Jerry Drake, for revealing this treasure to me.

  • A bucolic woodland with wind and sporty ink, mounted on the first Paco Rabanne pour Homme. A blend reminiscent of the first Polo Green but less heavy, more balanced towards green, mature, and aquatic notes with a sporty twist. A fragrance of great elegance and balance, versatile, that captures the interior of a beautiful forest at midday. Simply exquisite.

  • Adagio takes its time with calm and confidence, a fist of steel within a soft glove. Its path is winding yet climbs steadily and clearly, striking the deepest keys of the soul.
