  The immortelle is a rare flower. It smells neither fresh nor floral, but rather has a resinous, heavy, earthy and everyday scent. It’s an aroma that could give body to a ghost, because it is the exact opposite of the ethereal. It’s terpene-heavy, as if every bud were the wound of a conifer or a window into the world of bitter medicinal herbs. It resembles lavender, but I think immortelle is more interesting because it lacks those camphorated nuances. Instead, it has a solemn, sticky heaviness amidst a cloud of dry vapours, like the sound of a hairdryer. If there were a parallel universe where evolution took a different path, lavender and immortelle would have been swapped. Immortelle Solaire is a very respectful interpretation of immortelle, in which some of these bitter notes are exaggerated while its vapours are polished. Without being sweet, it comes across as very likable. And being likable, it doesn’t stop being haughty.
