A solid piece of ‘cochenuvism’. I’m not a fan of the genre, but blending leathery tobacco with osmanthus is brilliant. It adds a feminine touch that balances and cleans it up. Though I wince at the osmanthus, which can often be phosphorescent, here its blinding brightness feels like fresh, supple leather. Aggressive, ostentatious, a bit ‘new money’, but they make a great pair. The title is misleading: there’s no orientalist or mysterious China, but rather today’s developing China, with drones and shopping centres. Perhaps there’s room for a touch of wild vegetal freshness, like a park in the middle of the concrete. In the end, that leathery power fades, leaving an incense-scented, hollow and lugubrious base.
